Growing up in Vernon, British Columbia, Mason Mashon spent the majority of his time snowboarding and mountain biking. These days, he still does — but he spends as much time taking photos of other riders and the surrounding wilderness as he spends riding the mountains himself.
“I am constantly switching from in front of the camera to behind the camera in order to seek out perspectives and vantage points. It keeps it exciting for me.“
Being a great mountain biker and snowboarder isn’t that unusual amongst Whistler locals, and plenty of the region’s photographers can rip both as well. What sets Mashon apart is a willingness to see things from unique perspectives and his drive to actively seek those perspectives out.
In the video above, Mashon credits his time as a professional mountain biker, and his endless exploration of his own backyard, for helping to put all the pieces together. Capturing that finite moment in time to share with the world is what makes him happy, and it turns out it makes us pretty happy as well.
