Winter X Games 2017 kicked off with a bang with Men's Superpipe Finals going off on Thursday night in the massive 22' pipe in Aspen, Colorado. The field was stacked with a slew of the world's best riders who all showed up to throw down in the first major U.S. pipe contest of the season. The best of two-run final had the riders going for broke by attempting their hardest tricks right out of the gate. With temperatures hovering right around zero degrees, the pipe was bulletproof, which caused some riders issues with landing their tricks.
Scotty James took the lead early with his first run, which was also the first run of the night. He earned an unprecedented score of a 90.00 for a run that was huge and packed with style.
"I just came out and had so much fun," said James following his win. "It's absolutely a dream come true! It's really surreal, I'm just over moon-- There were some really tough riders, but we did it.... Stoked!" he continued.
Matt Ladley, reigning X Games champ, stomped his second and final run to snag second place while Taylor Gold picked up third.
Other riders, including, Shaun White and Iouri Podladitchkov, simply couldn't put down clean runs. After being uninvited by X Games last year, Shaun White, who hasn't medaled in X Games since 2013, placed eleventh, the lowest he's ever placed since 2000, when he was a rookie.
