When snowboarding first dawned upon the land of vikings, way before Terje Haakonsen and Andreas Wiig started their rampage across the world, it was all about one place: Skei (www.skeikampen.no). The backcountry resort was misty delicious, with gaps and cliffs, which has still not seen a cover of a magazine. It was the days when Marius Johansen of the early K2 Team used to do triple backflips at the drop-offs encompassing the slopes close to Lillehammer in Norway. It was powder, not Ipods, filling your ears back then.

In the mid-nineties the parks started to pop up everywhere and the hay-days were over at Skei. The snow resort went into a backdrop only attracting families and the elderly. But guess who’s back from the vintage sack!

The Sheik of Skei is a Super Slopestyle invite only contest 2-5th of February, which will separate men from camels and single out one Sheik who will rule over the mountain for one year and entitle him to free oil and a nice cash bash. 50 G’s to be exact.

It took an Austrian, Alex Cimarolli, to understand the modern needs of the snowboard community. He hooked up with the largest snowboard magazine in Scandinavia, Tacky Magazine (www.tacky.no and www.tacky.se), and the richest man in Norway, Olav Thon. Together they hired Lars Eriksen to make the course of his dreams. Lars Eriksen is the designer behind Burton European Open and Burton Spring Session, and got one thing on his mind: Shaping and only shaping.

The course starts with a flat-down box 4×5 m, then a step-up to another jump (8-10 m), 25 m big jump, 8-10 m right-hand corner and finishes off with a 5×10 m wallride. In addition the riders are encouraged to use the backcountry as much as they want, there are some secrets lurking in the terrain, which for sure will make the covers of several international magazines.

This contest is about taking the mountain back and giving it to the snowboard community. The Sheik of Skei will open a new resort to the able and willing. The contest is free for everyone to watch – to ride only for the top notch.

The Rider list: Roger Hjelmstadstuen, Thomas Harstad, Daniel Franck, Christian Halland, Sebastian Kjellström, Nicky Wieveg, Mikael Fransson, Kim Christiansen, Andreas Moen, Kareem El-Rafi, Alessandro Boyens, René Broder, Danny Larsen, Tapio Kuusakoski, Viktor Ardfors, Dimitri Fesenko, Chris Sörman and more…
