David Sternberg was named Senior Vice President of Emerging Networks for Fox Cable Networks Group and also General Manager for the new action sports network that Fox will launch this summer. Sternberg, who retains his role as general manager of both Fox Sports World and Fox Sports en Español, will expand his responsibilities immediately, announced Tony Vinciquerra, president and CEO of Fox Networks Group.
“David has done a phenomenal job growing our developing sports programming networks and now he will bring that same expertise to the exciting potential of action sports here in the United States,” Vinciquerra said.
Sternberg will now supervise all business and financial operations for the new action sports service, as well as overseeing programming, marketing, sales and distribution strategies. He will work closely with CJ Olivares, the head of programming and marketing for the new network, who joined upon the formation in December 2002. Featuring surfing, skateboarding, snowboarding, BMX and MotoCross, the new network is designed to service the more than 102.2 million people in the U.S. between the ages of nine and 34, and particularly the more than 36.6 million teenagers, who’ve become major participants and fans of these emerging sports.
Sternberg will work with Fox Cable’s affiliate sales and marketing team to explore growing distribution opportunities for all Fox Cable’s emerging programming networks. These currently include Fox Sports World, the nation’s only 24/7 programming service for international sports and American soccer enthusiasts; Fox Sports en Español, similarly the nation’s only 24/7 destination for Spanish-speaking sports fans; and now the new action sports network that will make its debut to DirecTV and Time Warner Cable subscribers, among others, later this summer.
“All you’ve got to do is look out your window to see that action sports are not only a major sports activity for the youth culture but also the basis of an entire lifestyle,” Sternberg said. “Our goal in managing early-stage opportunities is to aggressively identify them as they develop and then employ some fiscal responsibility as we ultimately transition them from concept to on-air launch.”
During Sternberg’s current tenure as General Manager, Fox Sports World, the exclusive U.S. home of the English Premier League, has more than doubled its subscriber base to 16.8 million overall and has fast become the No. 1 television destination for fans of both domestic and international soccer. Its sister service, Fox Sports en Español, has grown its subscriber total by 53 percent during the past 18 months, and with 5.1 million strategically placed homes reaches more than 35 percent of the U.S. Hispanic cable and satellite market.
Before joining Fox Sports International as Director of Business Development in 1998, Mr. Sternberg served as a management consultant in PriceWaterhouseCoopers’ Entertainment, Media and Communications Strategy Group in Los Angeles, assisting major clients from both the retail and entertainment industries. Before that, he held sports management positions with World Cup USA 1994 and the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum – home to the Golden State Warriors, Oakland Raiders and Oakland Athletics. Sternberg graduated with a Masters of Business Administration in 1996 from the University of California at Los Angeles’ Anderson School, and previously earned a Bachelor of Arts in Comparative Literature from Princeton University in 1990.
