La Canada, Calif.,–Sport Chalet, Inc. (Nasdaq: SPCH), announced that it has signed a lease with The Glacier of Anaheim, LLC for 29,000 square feet of retail space in Sportstown, home of the Gotcha Glacier action sports facility. The Glacier, America’s first indoor snowboard and surf park, is scheduled to open in 2002. The project is located directly adjacent to Edison International Field at Sportstown in Anaheim, California.
The Glacier facility will house indoor snowboard and skateboard parks, a free ice skating rink, the largest rock-climbing wall in North America and six separate Wave Loch Flowrider(R) surfing and bodyboarding waves. The facility will also feature restaurants and additional retail stores along with a fitness center, children’s snow play area, interactive arcades and more.
“We’ve always wanted Sport Chalet in the project,” said Brad Kinney, Glacier CEO. “With eighteen different sports in the Glacier building, sporting goods is an important part of our retail mix. We looked at several large national chains and found the best of them right here in Southern California. No one does it better than Sport Chalet and we’re pleased to have them on board.”
Glacier COO and twenty-two year ski industry veteran, Michael Gerard, echoed Kinney’s enthusiasm. “Not only is Sport Chalet one of the biggest and most progressive sporting goods retailers in the region, they’re deeply rooted in the Southern California lifestyle and they have an incredible image in the marketplace. Sport Chalet is definitely the right brand for our project.”
Commenting on the project, Craig Levra, President and CEO of Sport Chalet stated, “This is a great opportunity for us. The location is outstanding and our association with the Gotcha Glacier will further enhance our long standing affinity with Southern California sports enthusiasts. This project is particularly exciting for Sport Chalet because our customers can purchase from all of our specialized categories including blading, climbing, body surfing, wintersports, diving, and golf, then immediately use these products inside the Glacier.”
The Gotcha Glacier is the anchor tenant of the Sportstown development located adjacent to Edison International Field in Anaheim, California. The project is contained in Anaheim’s larger Sportstown District — an 805-acre region that includes The Glacier, Edison International Field and the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim. Between the three sporting venues, the District offers spectators and sports enthusiasts the opportunity to watch or participate in 28 different sports. When completed, the Sportstown District in Anaheim will be the largest concentration of permanent sporting activities in the United States.
