MT. HOOD, OR (Immediate Release) ¿ It is one of the largest building construction project in the resort’s 32 year history ¿ a major upgrade and expansion both inside and out of the South Lodge, the original Mt. Hood Meadows base lodge. Construction began on the lodge immediately following the close of the 1998/99 season, and is scheduled for completion prior to Christmas.

The renovation will provide a new day care facility, a new ski and snowboard equipment rental facility, a new demo and repair center, and remodeled restaurants, sport shop and concierge. The project will be topped off with a 16,000 square foot sun deck. Added conveniences include new season locker rooms and new larger restrooms with adjoining changing areas.

The new day care center will be state-certified providing quality care and programs for infants to age four. In addition to age appropriate toys, the center will offer computers and activities including snow play and a ski option for older children. The center will be open daily from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Reservations, while not required, are strongly recommended especially on weekends and holidays due to limited space availability. For reservations call 503-337-2222 ext. 374. Meadows has also expanded its popular KIDSKI center for children 4 to 12 years old.

Three new state-of-the-art Bombardier “Microprocessor Plus” snowcats are being purchased to enhance the slope grooming operation. And to alleviate any Y2K fears Meadows is installing a new standby generator plant that can power the entire resort operation in the event of a power shortage.

There is also good news on the racing front ¿ the resort has purchased a Tag Heuer 805 timing system for club racing, which will provide accurate times on dual courses. The resort is streamlining its club reservation process to make registration, ticketing and on-hill activities easier. Meadows hosts hundreds of ski race events each season and will be the site of the Oregon State High School Championships in March.

Responding to requests from last season, Meadows will feature coin-op racing Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays throughout the season. The coin-op course will be fully equipped with an updated Time Tech timing system, and will provide both recreational and serious racers a course on which to train, compete and have fun.
