February 7-9 Mid-Winter Carnival for Athletes and Fun-lovers

Featuring: Beacon Olympics, Uphill/Downhill Race, Yukigassen Snow Battle

January 22, 2003, Silverton, Colo.— Silverton Mountain is busy planning for the 2003 Winterstick Hard Core Mountain Challenge and Town of Silverton Snowscape Carnival. The party gets underway the weekend of February 7-9, featuring action-packed days and nights of winter fun for all ages, appealing to local residents and visitors alike.

The festivities kick off on February 7th, with the 2nd annual Winterstick Hard Core Mountain Challenge. This uphill downhill race covers 3,800′ vertical from 10,400′ to 12,300′ and back down. The first to reach the bottom using snowshoes, skis, or a snowboard is the winner. Last year’s event was a huge success with Sara Ballatyne, pro mountain biker and eco-challenge racer finishing in less than an hour. One competitor, after winning a Black Diamond Avalung, said, “That’s what I need, another lung!”. The race will have cash and prizes from Winterstick Snowboards, Couloir Magazine, The North Face, Backcountry Access, Clif Bar and DaKine.

After the race, Silverton Mountain (the Silverton Outdoor Learning and Recreation Center), Winterstick and Backcountry Access will sponsor two snow study workshops:

a) Continental Snowpack and Overview of Avalanche Control Methods

b) Beacons and Rescue Techniques

Both events cost $35 to enter and weekend packages including lodging are available through Silverton Mountain.

Friday concludes at the ski area with an after party and award celebration sponsored by Ska Brewery at Grady’s (Silverton Mountain’s Bar). But the party is not over…the chamber of commerce is sponsoring a casino night and a pool tournament.

On Saturday, Couloir Magazine’s Beacon Olympics starts at 11:00am. This event is free but the non-skier lift ride costs $15. The rest of the day, visitors can enjoy discounted guided ski trips at Silverton Mountain or one of the many winter carnival events in the Town of Silverton, like snow sculpture contests, snowshoe races, cross country ski trips, broomball, or the Yukigassen Snow Battle. Yukigassen is a game resembling an organized snowball fight and capture the flag.

The party and award ceremony starts at Grady’s (Silverton Mountain’s Bar) at 3:30pm on Saturday and continues into the evening at Silverton’s Sin City Boogie at the Grand Imperial Hotel.
