What’s the last piece of good advice you received?

Good advice can be hard to take. The other day I was at the grocery store¿in a big hurry, see¿and I noticed the loudspeaker announcing something about a car in the parking lot. I ignored the announcement like I ignore everything that doesn’t immediately have to do with me. But when I inadvertently heard the words “silver Audi,” I got to thinking¿hey, I have a silver Audi. Then came the clincher¿”Colorado plates.” My brain labored in slow motion to fathom the odds of such a coincidence. Was there someone else who’d also recently moved from the Rockies and had been equally irresponsible to the DMV about getting new California plates? No, there was really no denying it: I was the culprit. All right. Drop the mustard. Walk out quickly¿but not so quickly that people know you’re the idiot.

When I got outside, I found that my car had rolled backward and was now blocking one of the driving lanes in the lot. There she sat, gleaming in the bright sunshine, with a little crowd of puzzled Albertson’s employees forming on one side. I guess I’d forgotten to put my parking brake on. “I guess you forgot to put your parking brake on,” said an observant member of the crowd. And that’s when an immaculately tanned woman in her forties bestowed on me the earth-shattering advice that could’ve prevented the whole tragic incident: “You should be more careful,” she said. “You could’ve really hurt someone.”

I am trying to be more careful, but there’s still a lot more good advice out there to be had. Hear it from the mouths of the pros.¿J.S.

“When I was a child in school, I asked my teacher, ‘What should I try? Should I paint pictures? Should I sing songs?’ This was her reply¿’Que será, será, whatever will be, will be. The future’s not ours to see. Que será, será.'”

“The best piece of advice I’ve ever gotten was that everyone goes through similar experiences in their snowboarding careers. Like with injuries¿everyone gets injured and has that downtime. Everyone has that time when they’re excelling and doing well, and there’s never a set order of what comes when. Especially when you’re going through difficult times with injuries, you’ve got to remember that you’re not the only one this has ever happened to. And your career is long-term; snowboarding is a long-term thing.”

“‘Therefore be clear-minded and self-controlled so that you can pray. Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling … If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides.’ This came from the Bible¿1 Peter 4:7-9, 11.”
