Key Positions Filled At Mountain High

Wrightwood, CA – August 22, 2002 – Mountain High’s tremendouspopularity has attracted a wealth of new talent and this summer, KarlKapuscinski, Mountain High’s General Manager, announced the followingmanagerial appointments.

John McColly – Director of MarketingHailing from San Diego, John McColly is a Southern California nativewith over 10 years of industry experience. He has been influential inMountain High’s growth and, as Director of Marketing, looks forward tocontinuing its rise. “As we move forward, it’s my goal to secureMountain High’s position as the #1 resort in Southern California.” Johnnow oversees all resort marketing along with internet technologies,future planning and quality control.

Darren Phillips – Food & Beverage ManagerAs a successful manager of the Hard Rock Café, Planet Hollywood and manyother notable restaurants, Darren Phillips brings a wealth of culinaryexpertise to Mountain High. His background also includes a degree inCommercial Recreation Management. Most recently as Food & BeverageManager of Heavenly, CA, Darren called upon his diverse experience topinpoint areas in need of improvement and introduce profitablesolutions. This season Phillips will oversee Mountain High’s seveneateries with menus ranging from traditional to fine dining. SaysDarren, “I want to build structure into the department and raise it to alevel commensurate with the rest of the resort. This year we’re goingto focus on quality food and better overall performance.”

Shane Smart – Terrain Park Designer & BuilderShane Smart’s terrain experience spans the past decade and reaches fromone side of the country to the other. His resume includes numeroussnowboarding Grand Prix events, the Van’s Triple Crown and the SwatchWorld BoarderCross which he toured with from 1997 to 1999. Beginning inBig Bear as a light groomer, Shane excelled both in the cat and on hisboard. After just several years of riding, he turned pro and was pickedup by Rip Curl clothing and Expired snowboards, a since expired company.His career took him to Utah where for two seasons he built hisreputation and perfected his signature double front flip. While workingon the Swatch World Tour, Smart continued to compete and was rankedseventh in the United States in BoarderCross.

Since 1999, Shane has been at Mountain High, coordinating the groomingof the parks. Now as the head designer and builder, he will beintroducing new attractions that will both excite Southern California’sriders and position Mountain High as the main force in park design.Assisting him will be Keith Pfahler, most recently known for hisexceptional work at Bear Mountain, CA.

Says Smart, “Compared to other resorts, we have one of the best terrainprograms in the country but my goal is to make it even better. I loveto build almost as much as I love to ride and this summer I’ve foundsome incredible areas for new features. You’ll have to come see foryourself.”

Randy Pattison – Rental & Retail ManagerSince 1978 Randy Pattison has been engulfed in winter sports doingeverything from custom ski boot fitting for US Ski Team athletes tomanaging ski and snowboard shops such as Schiros and Sport Chalet. Hisonly period away from the industry was a five-year tour at SouthwestAirlines where gained tremendous guest service experience. Immediatelyprior to Mountain High, Randy was the Rental Manager at Snow Valley, CA.Now he is directing all rental and retail operations at the WrightwoodResort including the integration of new technologies. Says Randy, “Iwant to raise the standard of guest service for these two departmentsand make things more efficient for the visitor. Flows and floor plansare my specialty.”

James Renick – Snowmaking SupervisorJames Renick is one of the original Southern California snowmakersbeginning at Goldmine in 1984. From there, his experience took him toSnow Valley, CA, where he became the Night Manager orchestrating allnighttime activities such as snowmaking, groomming, plowing, and more.Now at Mountain High, Renick’s singular focus in on quality snowmakingoperations. “I plan to fine tune the snowmaking system this winter andmake it run better than ever,” says James. “We’ve got a great team andI look forward to upholding Mountain High’s tradition of being the firstto open.”
