Ernst & Young To Sponsor USSA

Professional Services Giant Will Sponsor U.S. Ski & Snowboard Teams In Firm’s First Integrated Sponsorship in Hundred Year History NEW YORK–Ernst & Young LLP has entered into a three year sponsorship agreement with the United States Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) as the Official Professional Services Firm, with category exclusivity in assurance, corporate finance, e-business advisor and tax through the 2002-2003 season, it was announced today.

While financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed, Ernst & Young will have category exclusivity and usage rights of all USSA logos and marks, including the U.S. Ski Team and U.S. Snowboard Team, access to USSA athletes, hospitality at World Cup events each season, as well as numerous other entitlements and sponsor benefits.

Ernst & Young will serve as title sponsor for both the men’s downhill and super G World Cup events at Beaver Creek, Colorado on December 2-3, 2000, and as exclusive title sponsor of the Ernst & Young Corporate Challenge, held in conjunction with these World Cup events. As part of the agreement, Ernst & Young will also receive a broad range of broadcast and print advertisement commitments from the USSA for the 2000-2001 season and throughout the term of the contract. This season, that will include numerous :30 second units in six network broadcasts (CBS & NBC), multiple units on each of 8 USSA ESPN broadcasts, broadcast enhancements and features during World Cup events on NBC and ESPN , as well as numerous on-air billboards.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for us to not only help young athletes reach for gold but to develop an integrated marketing program for Ernst & Young that reaches potential recruits and target CFOs who are defining the rules of the new economy,” said Jim Speros, national director of external communications at Ernst & Young. “We believe our shared attributes of speed, teaming, agility and innovation make us well suited to partner with USSA and the premier winter sports from both a participation and competition point of view.”

“We are happy to add Ernst & Young to the ranks of distinguished sponsors of USSA,” said Todd Burnette, vice president of marketing and sales for USSA. “It’s especially exciting to have Ernst and Young as a partner in the men’s downhill in Beaver Creek where our downhill skiers led by double World Cup winner Daron Rahlves and local hero Chad Fleischer will have an opportunity to showcase their talents in front of a hometown crowd and an international television audience. Ernst & Young is an outstanding multinational firm and a perfect partner for our athletic programs.”

Breaking New Ground for E&Y and USSA

In its 100-year history, this is the first time that Ernst & Young has invested in a fully integrated sponsorship program, but the firm is no stranger to the sports world. Ernst & Young’s sports and event marketing group has been involved in golf for years, through its sponsorship of professional golfers Loren Roberts, Kirk Triplett, and Donna Andrews, its customer hospitality programs at the Ryder Cup, PGA Championships and the Masters, and its sponsorship with the Metropolitan PGA of New York. The USSA sponsorship complements the firm’s existing golf programs while taking Ernst & Young into the highly coveted “skiing and snowboarding lifestyle” demographic with strong appeal to both genders as well as executives at Fortune 500 and entrepreneurial growth companies.

“In evaluating properties, we felt that skiing and the USSA provided Ernst & Young with the best return on investment for our sponsorship dollar,” said Jon Kayser, director of sports and event marketing at Ernst & Young. “We are committed to fully integrating our marketing and promotional efforts over the life of the skiing sponsorship to leverage our investment internally and externally and help take USSA and its athletes to a higher level in its support of the World Cup series.”

In addition to full USSA rights usage, Ernst & Young will have the opportunity to utilize USSA athletes for advertising and marketing purposes, and will have an Ernst & Young patch on all US alpine team outerwear and competition wear for each USSA event. The agreement also includes Associate Sponsorship of three alpine, three freestyle and one ski jumping World Cup events in the US each season.
