Burton’s First Annual Summer Invitational ‘The Abominable Snow Jam’

Burlington, VT – Now there’s even more of a reason to make the summer pilgrimage to Mt. Hood, Oregon: The Burton Abominable Snow Jam. Taking place on July 9th-11th at Timberline Resort on Mt. Hood, Oregon, the invitational event will include 35 of snowboarding’s greats competing in quarterpipe, halfpipe and slopestyle for over $100,000 in cash and prizes, including a new Volvo V50 Sport Wagon.

The Abominable Snow Jam is brought to riders by Burton, the creators of the world’s longest-standing snowboarding contest, the US Open. With an invite-only format and a significantly smaller field of competitors than the Open, the Abominable Snow Jam will have a more intimate, laid-back feel complete with barbeques, parties and summer fun on the glacier.

All three camps on Mt. Hood will have the opportunity to host a portion of the event. On July 9th, the quarterpipe will go down at High Cascade Snowboard Camp (HCSC), on July 10th, the halfpipe takes place at Windell’s and Timberline will host the slopestyle event on July 11th. Burton has given each camp $5000 to prepare for the event and one of them will win an additional $5000 if the riders decide it has the best setup. Each camp has carte blanche to make their feature spectacular. Burton has left this highly creative opportunity in the hands of the talented Pat Malendowski of Planet Snow Design who will focus on the HCSC camp and the legendary Jeff Flood who will work on the Timberline and Windell’s camp setups. Pat’s credits include the Park City Olympic superpipe and the US Open superpipes and Jeff Flood has been the man behind the scene at the X Games and the Olympics.

“I am so stoked about this event,” says Tim Windell, founder of Windell’s Snowboard Camp, “Summer isn’t the end; it’s the beginning of the new season. It’s when the mags start popping off and there is a great buzz in the air. Having Burton bring this event to Mt. Hood really puts the spotlight on everything we’re all doing up here.”

Riders are in the process of confirming attendance. To date over 40 riders have confirmed, including Peter Line, Ross Powers, Danny Kass, Tadashi Fuse, JJ Thomas, Kelly Clark, Marc Frank and many more. Here’s what they have to say:

“I can guarantee sunshine and sickness. Viva La Grenade!” -Danny Kass.

“This event is long overdue, and I can’t wait!” -JJ Thomas.

Spectators are very welcome and encouraged to take part in Mt. Hood’s summer riding conditions and hang out with snowboarding’s most accomplished riders from around the globe. For the athletes, welcome parties will take place on Friday, July 9th at the Ratskellar and Saturday, June 10th at Charlie’s both located in Government Camp a few miles down the hill from Mt. Hood.

Thanks to Burton Snowboards, Timberline Resort, Windell’s Snowboard Camp, High Cascade Snowboard Camp, Volvo, SoBe and Slim Jim for supporting the Abominable Snow Jam.
