Behind the Lines with the Full Moon Crew in Alaska

Words/Captions: Elena Hight

Alaska truly is the great frontier. As a snowboarder you just dream of one day setting foot into the elusive mountains that you grow up watching on film. Massive mountain ranges, crystal blue skies, blower powder, and endless steep runs highlight Alaska in all of its glory. As I was making my way up to AK these images flashed through my mind, and I could not wait to see not only what the mountains had in store for our crew, but also what an Alaska trip really felt like behind the camera.

These are the moments that we live for.

These are the moments that we live for.

Being a crew of six girls heli-boarding in Alaska is pretty unheard of…. And it's safe to say that we stuck out just a tad. The main Full Moon film crew consists of Hana Beaman, Leanne Pelosi, Robin Van Gyn, Helen Schettini, Jamie Anderson and Annie Boulanger. Due to a broken leg Annie couldn't join so the crew called me to join in, and so my first trip up to Alaska was set in motion.

We had two and a half weeks slotted for our trip, knowing that to get those perfect glory runs, its takes time and patience for all the factors to line up. While being at the top of your line in the middle of the mountains in Alaska might be one of the most glamorous parts of snowboarding, the other 90% of the time spent waiting is far less glamorous and can definitely test everyone's patience and ability to make the best out of every moment.

With six girls no matter how long the wait seemed to be, we kept entertainment and activities at an all time high. Days spent in town were filled with hikes, soccer, cooking, yoga, card games, and great gossip. The days that did have a chance of sun were spent at the heli pad, in hopes of flying. Hours and hours were spent booted up, hanging there on standby to be ready to go at any moment bantering with fellow film crews waiting for their chance to get out as well.

As the date of our trip lingered too close for comfort with no solid days riding, we finally saw a window in weather. Granted with two days that we like to refer as "sun as f*ck" we finally felt reward for patience and positivity from the bottom of those epic runs. There really is no trip that is like one to the Alaskan mountains. From the muddy parking lot, to company of bald eagles and moose, to the comradery of the tight knit snowboard community that gathers in this special place… Alaska is definitely the trip of a lifetime and worth the wait.
