Summer camp couldn’t get better than slushy conditions on the exclusive private terrain set aside for the Camp of Champions on Whistler’s Blackcomb Glacier. The last week at the MGT Summer Session was filled with good times—a Numa Numa 90’s dance party on the Nomis Box, a Satisfy your Cravin’ silent auction for the hottest coaches on hill, pirate costumes, Get a Hair Cut and Get a Real Job, World Cup soccer fever and some fantastic shredding at the Mega Gnarly Tricks contest.

Thirty-two campers from all over North America came to shred with MGT Coaches Amber Stackhouse, Jacqui Berg, Dominique Vallee, Joanna M and myself, Leanne Pelosi. Also looking good on the glacier was Priscilla Levac, who was prepping herself on the 50-foot jump for an upcoming photo shoot.

MGT campers and I got a little dance action on the Nomis box when the song Numa Numa, by the Romanian boy band O-Zone played. Joanna Majcherkiewicz (my partner in crime) and I got some inspiration to put the song on the iPod playlist when we saw a re-creation of the music video online. It’s the funniest thing ever, I laughed my arse off when I saw it. Check it.

song. Campers created two lines along the sides of the box so that the shredders could fly through on their shred sticks, giving out high fives, some of them slipping out and eating snow for lunch instead of sandwiches.

One of my favorite after camp activities was the Satisfy Your Cravin’ silent auction, where posters of on-hill pro coaches were captured shirtless—booyeah! Pro-riders Chris Dufficy, TJ Schneider, Wille Yli Luoma, Simon Chamberlain and Dwayne Wiebe were kind enough to pose and smile pretty for the camera. Simon and Dufficy took top honors in having their shared photo sell for a grand total of $51!I’m not going to lie, I was in the group of goggle-tanned pirates spotted drooling over Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom during Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s ChestI. Tourists in the village stared on as we flashed makeshift swords, stripes garbs, eye patches, flamboyant hats and let loose many an “Arrgghh in the Whistler movie theatre.

During the “Get a Hair Cut and Get a Real Job activity, I wanted to go back five years and turn into a camper so that I could get the she-mullet I’ve been dreaming about. Master stylist Jack Noesgaard and Sarah, from The Loft salon in Whistler treated ten randomly drawn campers to a hairstyle transformation, ridding them of serious helmet-hair. While campers got haircuts, the pros shared experiences of running a snowboard company, making snowboard movies movie and how to manage a pro shred career.

On the last day of camp, we put on a Mega Gnarly Tricks contest where campers could test their newly aquired shred skills. For two hours, girls battled it out in a jam in the Camp of Champions rail garden and on the quarterpipe. Super standouts included camper Raewyn Reid, who had a nice front board pretzel on the down rail, and a 270 bomb drop into the tranny of the QP. Lauren Shanahan had a sick front board on the down rail, and Liz Karcz was rewarded for her frontside handplant attempts. Props to the next generation of female pro-shreds!
