Westcott Claims First Snowboard Cross Gold Medal

Seth Westcott (Farmington, Maine) claimed the first Olympic gold medal in men’s snowboard cross, holding off a late challenge by Radoslav Zidek of Slovakia to win the big final at Bardonecchia Thursday afternoon.

Westcott trailed Zidek through the upper half of the course, then found an inside line to shoot past Zidek and into the lead. Zidek trailed by three yards coming off the final jump, but made a late surge and narrowed the margin to less than a board-length.

It is the sixth gold medal won by the U.S. in the 2006 Olympic Winter Games, matching the highest output by the U.S. team for gold medals in a Winter Games competed outside the United States. Snowboard have won three of the six.
