U.S. Team Named For Snowboard World Championships

PARK CITY, Utah (Jan. 12) – Twenty-five athletes representing the United States will be headed to the FIS Snowboard World Championships in Whistler, B.C., Jan. 15-23. Among those named to the American Worlds team are U.S. Snowboarding standouts Steve Fisher (St. Louis Park, MN), Hannah Teter (Belmont, VT) and Lindsey Jacobellis (Stratton Mountain, VT). The event marks the first time that Worlds will be held in North America in its 10-year history.

“Whistler is going to be awesome,” said U.S. Snowboarding Program Director Jeremy Forster. “They have great competition venues and run high-quality events. It is probably the most important Snowboard World Championships to date and will be a good indicator of how our riders stand as we work towards 2006.”

Competitors from more than 40 countries around the world will be on hand to compete for top honors in snowboardcross (Jan. 16), parallel giant slalom (Jan. 18), parallel slalom (Jan. 19), big air (Jan. 21) and halfpipe (Jan. 22). U.S. Snowboarding Head Coach Peter Foley said he is particularly excited as the U.S. Team has medal contenders in each discipline.

“This is definitely the strongest World Championships team we have ever fielded,” said Foley. “In every discipline we have chances to bring home medals. In alpine and SBX, we are fielding the strongest team we possibly can, and in halfpipe we have more than one athlete on the men’s and women’s side capable of winning a medal.”
