U.S. Snowboard Team Named

PARK CITY, Utah (Oct. 19) — World Cup halfpipe champion Tricia Byrnes (New Canaan, CT) and former world giant slalom champion rider Sondra Van Ert (Ketchum, ID) headline the 1999-00 U.S. Snowboard Team announced Friday. Also joining the team for 2000 is former World Championship medalist Lisa Kosglow (Boise, ID).

Head Coach Peter Foley said seven men and four women riders will be on the team, which opens its season Nov. 19-22 in Tandadalen, Sweden; there also is a five-rider development group. The World Cup schedule includes a stop at the 2002 Olympic venue March 3-5 in Park City, Utah, for giant slalom, halfpipe and snowboard cross events. The riders will be stateside Feb. 10-13 for the opening Chevy S-10 U.S. Snowboard Grand Prix in Mammoth Mountain, CA.

Byrnes won seven World Cup halfpipe events en route to becoming the first U.S. World Cup women’s HP champion in four seasons and added the HP silver medal from the 1999 International Snowboard Federation Championships in Val diSole, Italy. At the FIS World Championships last January in Germany, Van Ert — the ’97 GS champion — became the only person to earn a medal in the first three FIS World Championships when she picked up the bronze in GS – her third GS medal in three championships.

Kosglow, a 1998 Olympian, is a two-time silver medalist in giant slalom (1997, ’99) at the International Snowboard Federation World Championships, and joins the team for the first time.

Also among the 2000 team members are FIS halfpipe world champions Ricky Bower (Park City, UT) and Kim Stacey (Stratton, VT).

Foley also said Olympian, former world champion and five-time ex World Cup champion Mike Jacoby (Hood River, OR) and veteran Rob Berney (Whitefish, MT) had decided to take a year off from World Cup activity this winter. They expect to return for the ’01 season in preparing for the 2002 Olympics in Utah, the coach said, but Jacoby is looking to participate in some snowboard filming and photo shoots, opportunities which have been out of reach in recent years while he trained and competed.

“I’m looking forward to taking a break this year and coming back fresh in 2001,” said Jacoby. “This summer I’ve been surfing every day and am looking forward to riding powder every day this winter and continuing to enjoy the sport!”

“This’ll be a terrific opportunity for Mike, and it makes sense with no World Championships this winter, so we wish him the best and we’ll look to have him back next winter,” says Foley.
