Canadian skier Sarah Burke has succumbed to injuries sustained after a fall during training in the Park City halfpipe nine days ago, according to an Associated Press story. The fall caused her vertebral artery to rupture sending Sarah into cardiac arrest. She was rushed to a hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah where she had remained since the accident.

The pipe is the same one where Kevin Pearce fell and was knocked into a coma on December 31, 2009.

Sarah was a strong advocate for ski halfpipe to be included in the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia and was favored to win her fifth X Games gold medal later this month.

Our thoughts go out to the Burke family and her husband Rory Bushfield.
