PR: Molson Challenge Cup Snowboard Tour Set to Take to the Slopes

Toronto, ON – January 21, 1998 – Top riders from both sides of the border will compete for country and personal glory in the 1998 Molson Challenge Cup Snowboard Tour. Presented in association with Snowboarder Magazine, this tri-event challenge will feature both a jam format halfpipe for pros and amateurs and a big air pro invitational highlighted with performances by live bands and DJ’s.

The three competitions will take place at Blue Mountain (Ontario), February 27,28, Lake Louise (Alberta), April 3,4 and the finals at Mt. Tremblant (Quebec), April 10,11. Cash winnings of $40,000 will be at stake, including $10,000 to the winner at each event and a $10,000 tour bonus for the top three Canadian or U.S. riders with the highest combined tour points. Over $ 20,000 in prizes will also be awarded to amateur competitors.

“The 1998 Molson Challenge Cup Snowboard Tour will be an exciting combination of snowboarding, music and parties that is the core of the snowboard experience,” stated Jeff Carefoote, Senior Vice President of Sports and Entertainment for Molson Breweries. “These events will offer riders top-notch competition with lucrative rewards and allow the public to see the intense skill involved in this sport.”

The halfpipe jam competition format will thrill spectators, with at least two riders in the pipe at the same time during the entire length of each one hour heat. Since the riders are judged on their best three runs within the one hour time limit, each will be trying to out-do the last, and will deliver spectacular action. Qualifying for the halfpipe will be on Fridays with the halfpipe finals going off on Saturday at each of the events.

The Sony Playstation Big Air Invitational will be run on Saturday afternoon at each resort with feature band, Treble Charger performing at Blue Mountain and Mt. Tremblant. The main jump is big enough for the riders to do double back flips, and the quarter-pipe kicker at the end of the run-out gives competitors the chance to throw a big re-entry move. Each event will have music and DJ’s from BMG Music to crank up the competitors and the crowds.

Event management professionals Molstar Sports and Entertainment (Molson Indys / Hockey Night in Canada) and Tour Director Mark Taylor (97′ Westbeach Classic / Whistler World Cup Snowboarding / The World Ski and Snowboard Festival) will combine their skills to manage and produce the three event series.
