Mammoth’s West Coast Invitational

Mammoth Mountain, CA — Viva snowboarding! This Cinco de Mayo Mammoth Mountain, Red Bull and Vans are teaming up to give snowboarders a reason to break out the sombreros and piñatas. The 6th annual West Coast Invitational, featuring the Village nighttime Rail Jam and Fiesta de la Pipa, takes place May 4-6, 2007.

What started 6 years ago as a pro demo has blown up into a fiesta grande, complete with extreme snowmobile demos, live hip-hop concerts and snowboarding’s best pipe and rail riders competing for $20,000, all taking place over the course of one weekend. “It is really turning into a complete festival weekend, says Oren Tanzer, Mammoth’s Director of Youth Action Sports. “It’s the same thing WCI has always been — on steroids.

Vans Fiesta de la Pipa — Friday, 11am

The party fires up on Friday, May 4 at the second annual Vans Fiesta de la Pipa at the Mammoth Super Pipe. This is not like other pipe contests — it’s a 3-hour jam, judged by the riders themselves, in a freshly-built, 18-foot Zaugg-cut pipe lined with boxes, rails, unique jibs and piñatas. Despite the relaxed competition format the winners go home big-time with $10,000. Last year it was Chad Otterstrom — who will it be this year? Pat Moore, Peter Line, Eddie Wall, Jamie Anderson or any other of the 20 invited pros?

Red Bull Extreme Snowmobile Demos — Saturday and Sunday

New this year, Mammoth and Red Bull bring us freestyle snowmobile demos on the snow in front of the Main Lodge sundeck. See Red Bull riders throw backflips over the 55-foot ramp to snow landing and the 75-foot snow takeoff to snow landing in two shows each day. Caliente!

Live concert — Saturday, 3:30pm

Go straight from the slopes to the Village on Saturday afternoon for some live musica in front of Lakanuki. This line-up of West Coast hip-hop groups from Portland to L.A. features MyG with special guest Abstract Rude and Aceyalone, as well as performances by North Coast Underground, Hungry Mob and Sandpeople.

Village Rail Jam — Saturday, 8pm

The festividades continue for the main event. Mammoth Unbound and Red Bull are partnering to bring a gigante feature to the Village at Mammoth — a triple line built on 3 stories of scaffolding – the likes of which riders Lucas Magoon, Travis Kennedy and Eddie Wall have never seen before. After night falls, watch from all new stadium seating as a select list of pros hurl themselves on features including a down box with ledges, a 35-foot single 2-inch-round down rail and a 37-foot down-flat-down single rail. After negotiating this double line of features they will proceed to an 8-foot tall, 24-foot wide wall ride. Be there when judges deliberate who will take home $10,000 cash.

Live concert — Saturday, 9:30pm

Grab your amigos and get on the Village Gondola to Canyon Lodge for a live performance by Guru, Superproducer Solar, DJ Doo Wop and DJ Smoky. This 21-and-over apres-fiesta is only $5 per person, and there will be plenty of Red Bulls to go around.
