Locals Take Podium at Kokanee Boardercross Grand Nationals

Sunshine Village, Banff, AB (February 26, 2000) ¿ A cold day, full of fast-paced snowboard action at the Kokanee Boardercross Grand Nationals. Brett Tippie (Whistler, BC) and local favorite, Candice Drouin (Banff, AB) ruled the long, big featured and super fast boardercross course to win the men’s and women’s race here at Sunshine Village today. Tippie took home $2,500, and Drouin, $5,000 of the $10,000 total cash purse. Jason Moore (Kelowna, BC), and Andrew Murphy (Vancouver, BC) placed second and third in the men’s category. Jamie Warner (Pemberton, BC) and local Heather Bowen (Banff, AB) took home second and third place respectively.

The second stop of the four-event Kokanee Boardercross Grand Nationals attracted some top ranked International Snowboarding Federation (ISF) and national team member riders. The competition attracted approximately 150 male and female racers from 6 countries around the globe. Boardercross® is considered to be the future of competitive snowboarding. The competition features heats of six riders racing head to head down a specially constructed course filled with obstacles.

Just returning home after a gold medal win in boardercross at the Goodwill Games, local rider Candice Drouin (Banff, AB), was no surprise to take home first place again today. Drouin was way out in front for every heat, and maintained a solid race throughout every round. “Alberta women rule in boardercross,” remarks Drouin, “we had a solid race here today on a really great course.” In the men’s category the heats were also very intense throughout the day and into the final round. Brett Tippie and Jason Moore battled down the berms and whoops, but it was Tippie landing in first, as one of the few riders racing Alpine (hard boots) in the competition today.

The event wraps up with live in concert, Bif Naked, tonight at 9:00 pm at Wild Bills. The Kokanee Boardercross Grand Nationals will air on CTV Netowrk on April 15, and on OLN and CTV SportsNet. The next stop of the tour will head east to Horseshoe Resort in Barrie, Ontario March 16-18.
