Innsbruck Stampede May Have Begun With Lost Shoe

Vienna, Dec. 6 — A stampede at the Innsbruck Olympic stadium that killed five people Saturday night could have started because a man trying to leave the arena bent over to find a lost shoe, causing the people behind him to stumble and break through a wire fence, according to a report in the daily Kurier.

Four women and a man are still fighting for their lives in hospitals in the Tyrolean capital and a further 34 people have been injured after the panic at the snowboarding event “Air & Style,” the newspaper said, The five women who died at the event, which was attended by about 40,000 spectators, were between the ages of 14 and 21.
