Grand Prix Big Air to be Hosted at Fenway Park Feb 11-12, 2015
Fenway Park, the esteemed home stadium for the Boston Red Sox, will be the scene of a USSA Grand Prix sanctioned big air event for snowboarders and skiers February 11-12, 2015.
"Our intentions are to stage the biggest and best big air competition in the history of the sport at Fenway Park," USSA CMO Michael Jaquet said, according to Sports Business Daily.
Initial plans for the jump for the men’s and women’s event, purport the scaffolding will soar 110 feet high, and will start near center field, with the landing near home plate. This is the first time Fenway has hosted a snow sports related event in its storied 103 year history.
This comes as interesting news, and a sure sign that the USSA is committed to hosting larger-scale big air events that will garner more mainstream attention, given Big Air’s recent inclusion in the Winter Olympics. Big air snowboarding will debut on the world’s stage at the Pyeongchang Games in Korea in 2018.
“I think it’s really exciting," said Ty Walker, in a recent interview with Utah’s Desert News. Walker won gold in the first FIS-sanctioned women's big air event in Istanbul, Turkey earlier this year, and continues to set her sights on big air competitions.
“I think [Big Air] is really easy for the audience to understand and that’s the excitement, too," she said. "I think it’s going to be opening a lot of doors to different venues and locations that we can ride and demonstrate what we do," Walker continued.
Fenway will undoubtedly be quite the stage for this big air event. We're interested to see how it all shakes out, and what the overall public perception of the event will be. What are you initial thoughts? Are you into big air stadium events?
