Dumping at Silverton

Silverton, CO—Silverton Mountain Ski Area has been getting incredible early season snow this year.  Could this be El Nino?  We’re not sure, but several snow storms since September 22nd have piled up as much as 48 of snow base.  Over a foot of snow from this latest storm dropped on the mountain on Tuesday the 17th.  With just a bit more snow Silverton Mountain will be able to open for the season.  Staff members have been skiing for almost a month after Silverton Mountain got the “First Tracks of the winter September 22, (6 years in a row and every season since opening for business in 2001).

With the amazing snow conditions, Silverton Mountain employees have been skiing steep chutes and open powder fields never before skied in October.  The scheduled opening date for Silverton Mountain was planned for November 23, 2006, but plans have been revised to try and open as early as possible.  If the snow continues and temperatures remain cold enough to hold the snow, Silverton will open with 100% all natural snow.  One good storm is all it will take at this point.  Silverton Mountain is America’s highest ski area, with a peak elevation of 13,487′.

NEW for 2006-2007:

A NEW 40 Year Lease that allows additional unguided skiing- This will be the first time Silverton Mt has offered unguided skiing at the start of the winter season(formerly Silverton was restricted to offering skiing to guided groups, until April of 2006 when unguided skiing was first allowed by the BLM) and 164 Acres of NEW Ski Terrain- Silverton just added 164 acres of ultra steep expert terrain. Areas of this new terrain are nearly vertical, are loaded with cliffs, and are for the best experts only.
