Aspen/Snowmass Athlete Program Revamped

ASPEN/SNOWMASS, Colo., Dec. 21, 2004 – Aspen/Snowmass is proud to introduce nine world-class athletes to Team Aspen/Snowmass for the 2004/2005 season. In addition to the team, the Aspen/Snowmass Athlete program has been revamped with several new members.

Team Aspen/Snowmass members are Gretchen Bleiler, Chris Klug, Doran Laybourn, Ryan Lougee, and Mitch Reed. Each athlete on Team Aspen/Snowmass excels in their own unique way of snowboarding and will be traveling the globe this winter representing Aspen/Snowmass. Collectively, team members have earned a handful of Olympic and Winter X Games medals.

” The concept of a team began several years ago and quickly became a priority for the company, ” said David Perry, Senior Vice President of Aspen Skiing Company. ” Team Aspen/Snowmass not only assists the careers of local athletes, but also helps provide the best training facilities for these top riders. The feedback we get directly from these highly influential athletes assists Aspen/Snowmass immeasurably. ”

Phase two of the team is the Aspen/Snowmass Athlete Program. This is a select group of local athletes that are pushing the envelope day in and day out in the Aspen/Snowmass area in their selected sport.

Gretchen Bleiler, Snowboard – In 2003 Gretchen won eight consecutive halfpipe competitions and received the highest score in competition that a woman has ever received. After having to take the 03/04 season off because of a knee injury suffered in the first slopestyle competition of the year, she is back on the scene with even a bigger bag of tricks. Do not miss her hometown performance at Winter X Games Nine as she tries to take back the top spot on the podium. Gretchen will be filming for new movies due out next fall and continuing her column in Transworld Snowboarding. Chris Klug, Snowboard – Aspen local speed freak Chris Klug is the 2002 Olympic Snowboarding Bronze Medalist. Chris is a liver transplant survivor and competes around the world in alpine and BoarderX events on the World Cup Snowboarding Circuit. 2005 will be Chris ‘ thirteenth year on tour, and his twenty-second year boarding, certainly making him one of the veterans of the sport. Thisspring Chris, along with other top local pros, will again host the 5th annual Burton-Klug Spring Snowboard Camp in April ‘ 05 at Buttermilk Mountain. Check out Chris’ new book titled To the Edge and Back, an epic tale written with co-author Steve Jackson. Chris rides for Burton, Fiji Water, Bolle, Saturn and Aspen/Snowmass.

Doran Laybourn, Snowboard – Doran has represented Aspen/Snowmass across the globe showing his snowboard skills in contest and video parts. When he’s not snowmobiling in the back-country around Aspen he’s towing his snowmobile to find the best powder stash. Doran can be seen in the new release from Grenade, Revenge of the Grenerds, and Off Your Rocker Productions ‘ new movie, Sick. Ryan Lougee, Snowboard -Ryan has been a member of the prestigious Burton Pro Team for the past seven years. He continues to represent Burton around the world in the latest clothing, much of which he helps Burton design. His snowboarding is featured in their team movie ( The Process:3), website and product catalog. You can find him anywwhere from the backcountry to the park and on urban rails. Ryan rips it up for film and photo shoots, and was featured with a ten-page interview in the latest issue of Frequency. Mitch Reed, Snowboard – Mitch’s skills and style are unmistakably turning heads across the country. He kicked-off the season with a strong win at Bear Mountain’s Hot Dawgz and Hand Rails contest. Mitch has been traveling with Burton this fall shooting for upcoming product release. He plans on filming with Defective Films this winter and making a name for himself in select contests.
