What goes better with summer than Super Heroes? The beach? Flip Flops? Ice cream? Yeah, they are all good, but nothing says it’s summer like super hero movies and all the paraphernalia that goes with them. So what better theme for this past weekend’s all-girl extreme extravaganza than Supergirl? I certainly can’t think of one.

While the S3 Supergirl Jam in Huntington Beach was highly logical in that regard, it may have failed summer in another: it included snowboarding, the least summery of all sports. But with $5,000 on the line for first place, a few brave women hiked a giant rail contraption in the middle of the beach in snowboard boots, and just like magic, snowboarding happened in So Cal in July.

After two long, sweaty jam sessions, the top eight riders were decided and joined last year’s top two, Leanne Pelosi and Raewyn Reid, to make the top ten. Although the girls were complaining about having to ride for 25 minutes straight in the qualifiers, the final jam was set for 40 minutes. It took some super strength, but everyone except Gaby Viteri (who fell on her head almost immediately) rode a ton, and accordingly, lots of moves went down.

Early on Laurie Currier emerged as the one to beat, spinning the wrong way onto the rail, and landing more than halfway down it consistently. She kept stepping it up, and threw down the official best trick of the day, a hardway frontside 180 switch 50-50 backside 180 out. Although some of her 270 out moves seemed technically better, that one earned her $1,000. The combination of all her tricks earned her $5,000 for first place.

The other girls weren’t going to let Laurie just ride away with it, though. Raewyn Reid threw down some seriously tech tricks such as a backside 50-50 to backside revert to switch 50-50 and took second place. In third was beach-babe Chanelle Sladics, with tricks like a frontside-180 to half-Cab out, and a tailslide 270.

The snowboarding portion of the S3 Supergirl jam was a lot like the new Batman movie. It went on for a really long time, and it didn’t always make a ton of sense, but it was really fun to watch. Now if they can only figure out how to import powder to the beach,we’ll really have something.
