From the April issue of TWS and then some!
Last summer TransWorld took the Billabong All-Star team, including the likes of Scotty Lago, Kale Stephens, Eric “EC” Christensen, and Kurt Wastell, Down Under. We threw down for some heli days with Harris Mountain Heli just outside of Wanaka and sessioned the park at Snow Park.
During the planning of the trip, the only condition was that we would go no matter what the snow conditions were like. Too many planned trips are called off at the last minute due to poor conditions, and it had gotten to the point where I just needed to experience what New Zealand had to offer—rain or shine. It was a pact—tickets were booked and we were going. Like they say, good things come to those who wait; after seven years of trying to go, I made it, and we got it as good as it gets.
On our first day, it was bluebird, so we rolled up to Treble Cone resort just outside of Wanaka. The locals were up in arms about the snow: “Heaps of pow up there, mate—heaps of pow.” I was sold! The group had heard it before, but sure enough, we got up to the top and there were heaps of pow. The views out over the lake were insane—straight out of Lord Of The Rings.
When we went heli-boarding, the crew was still skeptical about the snow. Generally, even if it snows a decent amount in New Zealand, the strong winds can whip across the island and strip all the pow from right under your nose. But somehow, maybe beginner’s luck on my behalf, we got it good—real good with a great crew, laid back guide, two feet of fresh, bluebird, and that eerie mountain silence that only comes from not a breath of wind.
