Jonas Michilot is a creative dude. I imagine if he was born in a different time, or place he’d be a full-time artist of some sort. But, he was born in Minnesota in the late-eighties and took to snowboarding early on, so, that’s what he does.
Some day, something else. Maybe photography? He’s got an eye for it. And a love. He carries cameras with him everywhere he goes. He’s always looking for a photo. Here’s some he saw.
Name: Jonas Michilot
Age: 20
Hometown: Bloomington, MN
Sponsors: Academy, Vans, Airblaster, Cal Surf
When did you start shooting photos?
I’ve always liked taking pictures, but I started collecting cameras, and shooting more about 2 years ago.
What kinds of cameras do you use?
Mostly old film cameras, polaroids, and medium format stuff. Anything that I can get my hands on. No memory cards please.
Do you have any formal training in photography?
No, I had a photo class in high school, but I’ve just been trying to teach myself.. i have lots to learn still.
Why do you shoot photos?
Just for fun. I don’t think I would really be into it as much if I used digital stuff, because half the fun for me, is the process of getting the film developed and scanned in. It’s always a little different than you visualize it, and there’s so many different types of film to experiment with.
What other creative outlets do you have?
Singing in the opera, gymnastics, and football… i wish… but I do like drawing, juggling a soccerball with a big group of friends, sidewalk chalk, and just being outside.
A lot of snowboarders are also artists of some sort, whether it’s drawing, painting, photography, or music. Why do you think so many snowboarders are such creative heads? Do you see a connection between snowboarding and art?
Yeah, why not.. I feel like people who snowboard are a little different, and kind of have to be creative. It’s not your ordinary thing to be into. So there’s definitely a link between the two, you just have to find your jam.

Which photographers do you admire?
I was always into mark kohlman. Nick (dirks) is really into taking photos too, and he can snap a cool photo if you ask me. Liam of course, and anyone who busts out a film camera once in a while.
Finish this sentence: A photo is……. hard to make look as good as the real deal, but sometimes, you get some cool surprises.

i bet half of you “analog” yahoos spew go green philosophy left and right. think about how much paper and harmful chemicals are involved in shooting film!
analogy:
analog photography:digital photography :: riding a fixed gear: riding a bike with 24 speeds and a kick stand.
you pretty much do it to do it. there is NO clear cut benefit to riding a fixed gear, other than getting to cut your pants off short, and then you have a helluva time going up hills, not to mention stopping, because your dumb ass does not have any brakes.
good photos though, not hatin
May 4th, 2009 at 9:36 pm
i dont think this has any relation with fixed gears, which are gay. film is how it all started, and you cant try to copy it, or recreate it with photoshop film filters. if youre gonna make digital photos look like film, youre just cheating yourself, and you dont know how to take a good photo.
plus, if you think of all the time you spend on youre computer, loading photos, plus using photoshop, youre wasting a lot of electricity, i would think.

All you dick riders need to shut up.
Matt your a dumbass
I think Fixed gear bikes are for fag hipsters, but there is clearly benefits to it. when you remove gears that lowers your rotating mass which makes your peddling more efficient. Also less drag from the chain from going through the derailed.
If you would have just talked shit about people thinking its more artist to shot on film then I would have been fine.
Hallowbones
I don’t even know where to start with you. you are such a trend riding faggot. And I hate to say it but it does have relation to fixed gears in the way that %99 percent of the people who do it, do so to been seen, and to talk about it. They not doing it for any intrinsic value. Same way your riding films dick. The computer is a much more “efficient” way of producing photos. And artists have always used the best technology they can get there hands on. so why should a computer be any different.
Im a professional photographer, and I have shot on film and digital. If your not a broke bitch and can afford a nice Digital camera then its better then shooting film. If your broke, or don’t want to invest in an expensive cam you can get better resolution, and usually a more solid built camera and lens for cheaper. I still use nikon lens designed for Vietnam, on my 5d mrk II.
If this Jonas dude likes shooting film let him. Its America, And even if he is just doing it to be a hipster fag then at least he is the top hipster fag doing it and getting article written about it.

shooting film is FUN! like jonas said, its interesting to see how it turns out. he obviously doesnt give a fuck what what you internet haters think, and either does any real artist.
so save your breath you little internet haters
