WORLD’S BIGGEST POND SKIMMING CONTEST - THE 19TH ANNUAL CUSHING CLASSIC RESCHEDULED FOR SATURDAY, MAY 9*
Daredevils cross the frigid waters of Lake Cushing on skis, snowboards, and various manmade vessels
[Squaw Valley USA] April 30, 2009 – North America’s original pond crossing, the Lake Cushing Classic, returns to Squaw Valley USA for the 19th consecutive season. This wildly entertaining competition challenges local lunatics and gregarious guests to cross the vast and chilly waters of Lake Cushing on skis, a snowboard or any ski or snowboard-based vessel. Notorious for its colossal crashes, hilarious costumes, and ultra-creative pond skimming contraptions, the 19th annual Lake Cushing Classic is rescheduled for Saturday May 9, 2009.*
Pond Skimming has become a fixture on spring event lineups at resorts around the world. However, it was at Squaw Valley, 19 years ago, when the event was first conceived. At the end of each ski season, when the large pond at the base of the mountain (“Lake Cushing”) had melted, Squaw Patrollers would attempt to ski across Lake Cushing as a ceremonious goodbye to the season. The ritual developed into a public competition and later, Squaw Valley’s signature spring event. Since then, plenty of ski resorts have their go at pond skimming events, but none do it quite like Squaw Valley. Perhaps it is because the characters at Squaw are a little more daring, a little more agile, and a little bit better on sticks. Or maybe it is because “Lake” Cushing is a real pond, rather than a tarp-lined ditch or kiddie pool. Whatever the reason, the Cushing Classic blows other pond skimming events out of the water, and the thousand plus spectators each year are testament to that.
Prizes are awarded in five divisions – men’s and women’s ski and snowboard divisions and the fifth, and often most amusing, the unlimited division. This last group of participants has been known to attempt the Cushing Classic on beach chairs, old snowmobiles without engines and even a chair lift affixed to three snowboards. Judging is based on style, grace, creativity, and of course, successfully crossing the lake. The grand prize is a 2009-10 Squaw Valley Season Pass and a $100 cash prize is awarded to the highest scorer in each class.
Judges for the 19th Annual Cushing Classic are 5-time X-Games Gold Medalist Nate Holland, ski legends Tamara McKinney and Scott Gaffney, and the royalist of Squaw Valley royalty (hint: their last name’s are Cushing and McConkey).
The Cushing Classic is open to the first 50 registrants. Registration takes place on the Sun Deck rotunda at noon with the competition starting at 2 pm. The cost to participate is $15 per person. All entrants MUST be 18 years of age or older and have a life preserver and a helmet, and sign a liability release form.

A head-banging tribute to the days when 80’s metal ruled ~ Tickets On Sale NOW!
[Squaw Valley USA] April 1, 2009 - In spring of 2007 snowboard film legends, Mike and Dave Hatchett celebrated their birthday, with their band FORTRESS and special metal royalty guests, and played an unforgettable concert for 500 of their closest friends. The party was such a hit that Standard Films and Squaw Valley decided to make it an annual bash, open to the public. In its third year, the Hatchett Brothers’ 80’s Metal Bash featuring FORTRESS and special guests from Judas Priest and Racer X, is slated to be the party of the season - once again. The 3rd Annual Hatchett Brothers’ 80’s Metal Bash is set to make heads bang on April 11, 2009 in the Olympic Village Lodge.
“Fortress shows are a combination of Tahoe’s finest athletes and characters off stage, plus a motley assortment of pro musicians joining the band on stage to make for a unique concert experience,” says FORTRESS guitarist Dave Hatchett. “The Metal Bash is definitely one of the best parties of the year, so come help celebrate another great season at Squaw - rock out, and come get your shred on.”
FORTRESS’ head banger’s ball is Saturday, April 11 at the Olympic Village Lodge. Doors open at 8 pm and the show starts at 9 pm. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door, and are on sale now at Porter’s in Tahoe City and Truckee (cash only). Partygoers must be 21 & up and “dress metal.”
Formed by snowboard film pioneers Mike and Dave Hatchett, FORTRESS has been delivering explosive performances of original and cover music for nearly twenty years. Songs include covers from Metallica, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and originals inspired by these bands.
Fronting the band is Jeff Martin from Racer X and Whitfield Crane from Ugly Kid Joe. Together their vocal talents can shatter a beer mug. On the evening of Saturday, April 11 FORTRESS members Mike and Dave Hatchett (guitar) will be joined by Special Guests Scott Travis from Judas Priest, Klaus Eichstadt from Ugly Kid Joe, and local luminary Matt Reardon (singer/songwriter) will play an acoustic set.
This concert is a full fledged tribute to the days when metal ruled, so all attendees should bust out the skin-tight leather pants and torn-sleeveless t-shirts because 80’s attire is strongly advised. Prizes go to the best 80’s metal rockers who dress best and impress.
Skiers and riders can rock out at the 80’s Metal Bash by night and shred the world’s best spring conditions by day. Discounted spring ski-n-stay packages can be booked by calling Squaw Valley Central Reservations at 866-366-7261.
