Binding Timeline: Part 3 of 3

In the beginning there was an urge to find different ways to get down a snow-covered hill, to be different, and to tinker. This account is not meant to issue bragging rights or lay down who’s-first claims (unless they are widely known,) but it’s an effort to educate and give thanks to the early pioneers who had the ingenuity and took the time to make snowboarding better. This is a simple account of the evolution of the snowboard binding.

In 1996, Shimano and Switch introduced the first step-in binding system. The simplicity and convenience of step-ins seemed certain to be the death of strap bindings. But the patents that had been issued to Shimano and other binding manufacturers made it difficult for anyone to develop the heel/toe connection step-ins. So most companies scrambled to come up with alternatives like a connection at the instep of the boot. Brands that tried to keep up were spending tens of thousands of dollars in research and development and advertising, which later turned into hundreds of thousands in legal fees.
