StyleWars Returns To Falls Creek, Australia

STYLEWARS 2009 –THE YEAR OF RAISING THE BAR

Stylewars
August 24-28, 2009
Falls Creek Resort, Australia.

Australia’s premier on-snow festival and 4-Star TTR World Tour Snowboarding Event is back for 2009 in its winter home of Falls Creek, Victoria. The event will again showcase daily the very best in freestyle snowboarding action combined with nightly top shelf music acts open for all of the public.

Past Stylewars festivals have featured moments that have both taken the professional snowboarding world by storm as well as the music media. Ranging from the biggest snowboarding jump ever built in competition anywhere on the planet, to live music acts like The Presets, Airbourne, Katalyst, Bliss N Eso, Scribe and The Galvatrons.

This snowboarding event will again feature a three-day event over a four-day competition window, with two hours of daily continuous jam format action on a massive featured course designed specifically for the event. Also included in the Stylewars event is the night street rail jam event under lights, known as ‘28 Stairs’ held in the Village bowl outside The Frying Pan. This is a highlight of the week’s action as it aligns both the snowboarding action and the music crowds, and the party continues for everyone long into the night.

Event organiser Richard Hegarty says, “The event this year will be a lot more focused on the local snowboarding community. Due to the global recession, athletes who want to venture to Australia from Europe and the US are finding the travel costs a lot harder to afford in 2009. That won’t stop them all, however, as Stylewars has become known globally as the best progressive slopestyle event on the TTR World Snowboarding Tour and the confirmed athlete list is growing daily.”

Last year’s Stylewars winner, Charles Reid from Quebec, Canada, claimed, “Stylewars is the best format event on the tour. After three days you are pretty tired, but you really get to try your best tricks and have fun riding the park. You get pushed by your friends to try harder tricks and the level gets pushed each day, for sure.”

Stylewars is just as focused on putting on the biggest party of the year for the public in Falls Creek, as well as putting on the best quality competition. Every night of the four-day event will see the bars bouncing, so book in the dates and reserve your accommodation soon!

This year’s music line up includes some of the world’s best hip hop crews, soul musicians and turntablists featuring Koolism, Steve Spacek, Ru C.L and Katalyst with Space Invadas, Mr Rex and S1 as well as Motley and the Australian DMC champion DJ Perplex. More headliners to be announced! Check the website for the schedule and updates.

Music venues will be The Man and The Frying Pan.

Stylewars 2009 is proudly brought to you by Red Bull, Corona and Falls Creek.

Stylewars Day Two

STYLEWARS 2008 – DAY 2
Tuesday, August 26.

French Canadians Matts Kulisek and Charles Reid continue their dominance at Stylewars during day two of competition at Falls Creek Australia.

Strong winds, scattered clouds and a riders vote meant that today the Stylewars course was restricted to the bottom feature of the park – the gap jump. The jump had been re-shaped last night to give some more pop and allow the riders a little more hang time. The level of style and tricks definitely stepped up today at Stylewars with the help of the course fine-tuning from head park builders Rueben Cameron from Australia and Doug Mercer of Mammoth, California.

A colorful morning riders meeting.

Matts Kulisek (CAN) was again throwing down all day with consistent incredible tricks over the gap like backside rodeo nines and frontside 1080’s. His slaying of the jump pushed him to first place today and number one in the overall standings of the three-day freestyle marathon.

Kiwi Quentin Robbins. Ball shrinking one-footer.

Charles Reid (CAN) was bumped into 2nd position by his countryman Matts, but his slew of 1080’s, nines and smooth fives held him solidly in striking position for the in on the upcoming final day. “Usually in a contest the guys who spin the most win, but I have been spinning some big three’s and seven’s and I was winning yesterday, so I think it’s a great comp - you don’t have to do a 1260 or something to win.” Reid said.

Swedish tweaker Jonas Carlson backside 180.

Tyler Chorlton (GBR) threw the most interesting trick of the day with a nollie front-flip nose grab but was not to be outdone by Kiwi Quentin Robbins who launched a one foot indy over the high-speed gap kicker.

In the hotly disputed Bledisnow Cup, which is an Australia versus New Zealand comp within Stylewars. Australian riders took out day two, led by acting team captain Ryan Tiene and team mate Mitch Allan. New Zealand and Australia are now tied at one day each with New Zealand just ahead in the points.

Finlands Ville Uotila, bone yard spin.

Tonight at Stylewars the party continues with a special showing of Travis Rice’s new film That’s It That’s All followed by infamous Australian hip hop act Bliss & Eso who  ill no doubt tear the bloody roof off. Hangovers assured for all tomorrow.

The third day of Stylewars competition is planned for tomorrow, and includes the Volvo 28 Stair Rail Jam to be held in the evening under lights in Falls Creek Village.

2008 Oakley Stylewars

Stylewars 2008 Presented by Oakley
August 24 – 28
Falls Creek, Australia

It’s back. The event that brought you insane shred-action from Australia nearly one year ago (remember Torstein Horgmo launching numerous perfect spins over a 50m (150ft) kicker) is  just getting launched.

Torstein sending it into the aerial abyss in last year’s Stylewars.

While all you cats are up North enjoying summer and burning the crap out of your sensitive white-winter skin, the season Down Under has been a cracker. Maybe the best season in about 8 years and Falls Creek resort is getting prepared for the annual onslaught of snowboarding mayhem.

Stylewars 2008, is again sticking to its roots – it’s a lifestyle comp that will continue its tradition with nearly a full week of snowboarding, parties, live music and chillin.

“We have been swamped by amazing riders for this year’s event because of Torstein Horgmo’s riding last year, because of that riders from around the world want to come down here and take this title off him.” Event organiser Rich Hegarty said.

This years event is stacked full of 40 incredible riders from around the globe including Travis Rice (USA), Mikkel Bang (NOR), Torstein Horgmo (NOR), Sebastian Toutant (CAN), Janne Korpi (FIN), Sani Albabic (AUT), Marco Grilc (SLO), Tyler Chorlton (GB) and many, many more. Plus Southern Hemisphere shredders like Jake Koia (NZ), Robbie Walker (AUS) and Ryan Tiene (AUS).

The heavy-hitting field gets to enjoy a full week of chilling, music and snowboarding a private purpose built contest park, which is possibly the best in the world during August. With enough snow this year to build 3 kickers like last year, the crew at Stylewars and Falls Creek resort have been busy coming up with unique and flowing park features for the event.

Stylewars is all about the session and the lifestyle of snowboarding and music, which naturally mix. “The lifestyle of snowboarders and that of the musicians are pretty similar so putting them together in the same place on the same terms in a social lifestyle atmosphere is pretty natural.” Richard Hegarty said.

Confirmed music acts are:
Scribe (Multi Platinum artist from NZ), Bliss n Eso (AUS), Katalyst (AUS) Featuring RUCL and Steve Spacek.
Stylewars continues to be an invite only slopestyle event with a 4-star Swatch TTR World tour rating.

Check out the full invite list, music acts and park design at www.stylewars.com.au
