Copper is the host venue for the largest snowboarding and freeski event on earth - the 2008 USASA Nationals, from March 30 – April 4. Each year, nearly 2,000 of the top regional finishers are invited to attend the USASA Nationals to compete against some of the best male and female athletes from around the country in slopestyle, superpipe, boardercross, slalom and giant slalom in their quest to become National Champions.

Well my day was partly ruined due to the fact that I scheduled a twelve p.m. doctors appointment about a month prior, so things were in a low gear for me that morning. Then right afterward I took off on a seven mile drive to Copper Mtn. Opening day was not going to be missed, and according to my friend Java, things were aces on the hill. And to top it off it was a Friday, so not everyone and their mom was going to be there.
I Rolled up, grabbed a ticket from marketing, and was on the lift in no time. The jib park was filled with fun little rails, picnic tables, and all sorts of fun sliding paraphernalia. The sun popped out a bunch, and fun was had by all.
The Smith limo even rolled up and an impromptu limo/roof top rail session was had. Spectators were satisfied with all the bails, and the sweet maneuvers of East Coast transplant, Lucas Magoon. When the day was done, Lucas and (girlfriend) Gabby ended up throwing me into the tattoo shop for my first ever. What a day. —Ryan Thompson
