Perfect Opening Conditions at Cardrona, NZ

LAKE WANAKA, New Zealand (26 June) - Cardrona Alpine Resort opened its gates
to thousands of skiers and snowboarders today keen to enjoy the ideal snow
and weather conditions, a superb start to the 2009 ski season.

Snow sports enthusiasts started queuing well before for the first lift at
9.00am this morning and with over a metre of snow on groomed trails and
pristine snow conditions there were fresh tracks for many. The clear blue
skies and sunshine complimented the ideal conditions.

The first on the chair lift were rewarded with a bottle of bubbles as they
launched through the official opening banner.

³There were plenty of happy people up here today,² said sales and marketing
manager Nadia Ellis. ³Everywhere you looked there were smiling faces as
everyone enjoyed a fantastic opening day. We couldn¹t have asked for a
better start to the 2009 season.²

Cardrona 2009 Early Bird Season Pass Prices

Cardrona Alpine Resort has announced its 2009 season pass prices maintaining its position as excellent value in the Southern Lakes with both adult and student passes at just $540, children at $120 and the over 60s at $240.

A loyalty discount - adult and student $20, 60-74 year olds $10, child $5, will be offered to all 2008 pass holders purchasing a 2009 early bird Season Pass.

Duncan Veall, General Manager said keeping the season and ticket rates as low as possible demonstrates Cardrona’s commitment to supporting the local community and winter sports in general while continuing to develop the resort facilities.

“We aim to make skiing and snowboarding as affordable as possible for Wanaka and Queenstown locals across all sectors of the community as well as visitors to the resort, and hope they take advantage of the special Early Bird season prices.”

The Early Bird prices are available from 18 February until 18 March when they rise to $690 for adults and students, $170 for children and $265 for 60+. On 30 April they go to full season prices of $1,299 for adults, $1,180 for students, $290 for children and $395 for 60+.

As with previous years, children under six and adults over 75 can receive free day passes or have their own season pass for a small $5 processing fee.

Other lift pass prices announced include the multi-day pass and single day pass prices. The flexible Five Day Anytime Pass will cost $380 for adults, $315 for students and $195 for children. An adult day pass at Cardrona in 2009 will cost $85. A club card is also available giving discounts off lift passes as well as other winter activities in Wanaka and Queenstown.

For 2009 Cardrona is expanding its terrain with a new trail down the Arcadia Basin for more advanced skiers and boarders and will be certified by FIS for slalom and GS. The new trail will also have a $1m snowmaking upgrade. With snow making extended into the Captain’s Basin last year the entire resort will now be covered. New developments also include improvements to the 22ft half pipe and freestyle areas in preparation for the inaugural Winter Games NZ as well as the FIS World Cup.

Season passes are available online at www.cardrona.com or from the Wanaka town office. Cardrona is scheduled to open from 26 June to 4 October 2009.

LG Continental Cup Slopestyle Finals

LAKE WANAKA, New Zealand (September 4, 2008) – Fresh snowfall and varied visibility did little to dampen the level of riding at today’s LG Continental Cup Slopestyle finals at Cardrona Alpine Resort.

Postponed from yesterday due to bad weather, the finals were again hampered by less than perfect conditions. However, for the Norwegians it was a bluebird day as they secured five out of the six medal spots, including the men’s and women’s titles.

Men’s title went to yesterday’s top qualifier, Roger-S Kleivdal, with a stunning first run scoring 8.15 that featured a frontside tailslide to 270 off on the down rail followed by gapping the kinked rail to a frontside boardslide. On the three jumps he stomped a 5 followed by a cab 9 to a front 7. He was closely followed by fellow teammate, Tore-V Holvik, just 0.06 points behind in a run that included a front 5, cab 7, finishing with a switch back 7. Third place went to Braaten Gjermund with his solid display of rail riding.

In the women’s competition, Olympic bronze medalist Kjersti Buaas took out the top spot with a solid second run that put her a convincing 1.25 points ahead of Lisa Wiik. The winning run featured a 50/50 on the kink rail olly (jump) over the second feature. On the first big air she pulled off a backside 7, followed by a frontside air on the second hit, finishing with a huge backside 180 indy. The only non-Norwegian on the podium was America’s Lizzy Beerman who took third place.

Head judge, Ste’en Webster said, “Kjesti Buass really came through to stomp a winning run that was so well deserved, and her riding was streaks ahead of the rest of the field. The level of riding in the men’s was much tighter with the top half of the field contesting the podium positions.”

Highest placed New Zealander was Queenstown’s Nick Hyne in fifth position.

The world’s best halfpipe riders also had to contend with poor weather during their official training in Cardrona’s Olympic pipe in preparation for this weekend’s LG World Cup. Training will continue tomorrow with the LG World Cup qualifiers starting at 8am on Saturday September 8 and the semi finals and finals from 10am on Sunday September 9. All the weekend’s action is free for spectators to watch with the halfpipe within easy walking distance of the Cardrona base buildings.
