Top 5 Most Mainstream Moments Of 2011

Snowboarding has reached the mainstream. Whether you think that's good, or you think it's totally awful, the truth is it's reached the masses. Since that's the case, we might as well bring you the Top 5 most mainstream snowboard moments of 2011…

1. The NY Times Talks About Shaun White's Snowboard Pants…

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/30/sports/30xgames.html

oh yes, you heard us right. Last year when Shaun White failed to make the cut in slopestyle, the entire world was up in arms. But they weren't upset because the golden child was now only up to par. No No, that's not what people were mad about at all. They were mad because he was wearing extremely tight, and funny snowboard pants.

However all the anger couldn't stop the Flying Tomato, because he came back in SuperPipe and shut up all the naysayers with a crazy run that couldn't be touched…

2. Gretchen Bleiler and Louie Vito in ESPN The Magazine.

By now you've probably seen the infamous "body issue" of ESPN the Magazine with Gretchen Bleiler naked on the cover, and Louie Vito naked inside.

These photos got a lot of people talking this year. The last time I checked, these weren't the body types of your average snowboarder. These are body types of Greek gods and goddesses. Yes Louie, that's right, i said you had a body of a Greek god, whatever, get over it. I can say this though, getting a body like that isn't easy. So you have to respect these guys for the time and dedication it took to get into that kind of shape.

3. Travis Rice on The Conan O'Brien Show

Travis being on Conan might have been one of the greatest mainstream moments our "sport" has ever seen. Not only did Travis show a side of snowboarding that normally gets over looked, he also presented himself, and spoke in a very well manner. It's a pretty rare circumstance for a snowboarder to represent us well on national TV…

4. MTV makes a movie about snowboarders in a car buried in an avalanche…

So it happened again. Corporate America made a movie about "snowboarders" that makes people not want to go snowboarding? What did we ever do to you? We just want to have fun! Is that too much ask? Why corporate America must you continue to make movies in which we either get stuck on chairlifts and freeze to death, or get buried in a car and die. I say enough is enough!

5. Lindsey Jacobellis sings "Tangled"

This fall the snowboarding community was shook off its rocker. Lindsey Jacobillis did something that no snowboarder has ever done before. She put up a youtube video of her singing a famous Disney song from the movie, "Tangled". She did what Robert Downy Jr in the movie Tropic Thunder said to never do…

But really though, you have to commend her. That takes guts. Doing whatever you want to do, and knowing there's going to be a public backlash, and still doing it is something many of us will never, ever do. We would be to scared. So for that Lindsey, god bless you.
