SNOWBOARDERS SHAPETHE FUTURE OF THEIR SPORT

Snowboarders are taking their sport back to the roots. Led by two rider owned events and a strong coalition of industry players, snowboarders are shaping the future of their sport by creating a unique global tour concept. Starting the movement with an excitingqualifying system to The Arctic Challenge, developed by legendary snowboarder Terje Haakonsen, the alliance establishes a joint effort never seen before on the snowboardingscene.

Snowboarding is a genuine athlete driven sport. The riders that shaped the history of snowboardingin the 80s and early 90s are now strongly influencing the development of differentkinds of riding, rule books, events, companies, productdevelopment and communication about the sport. Younger riderslearn from their peers and demand a say in the decision-making.With the respect, competence and finances of the companiessupporting snowboarding, the new tour is a strong force in therider driven era of snowboarding. The companies supporting thisinitiative from the beginning are Burton, Billabong, Quiksilver,Vans, Volcom and O’Neill. Other board and apparel companies willbe invited to the coalition. Other companies who are committed todeveloping contests which will join the series in 03/04 areWestbeach, Rusty, and Oakley.

Riders have developed and own two of the events on the newtour. Burton pro rider Terje Haakonsen is in charge of the seasonending, snowboarder’s dream week of The Arctic Challenge in thestunning surroundings of Lofoten, Norway. Swedish pro riderJacob Söderquist is making one of the most innovative snowboardevents ever in Falun, Sweden: The Battle.

The other events onthe tour are a selection of the finest from the snowboard scene:Burton US Open (USA), Vans Triple Crown (USA), Quiksilver Slopestyle Pro (France), BurtonEuropean Open (Italy), Air & Style (Austria), O’Neill SB-Jam (Switzerland) and Nissan X TrailJam (Japan). O’Neill SB-Jam is initiated by Swiss pro rider Dani Costandaché. Swiss pro rider Reto Lamm holds a key position in the Nissan X Trail Jam.These events will each have 1 to 3 qualifying spots to The Arctic Challenge.
