Loon Mountain, NH–March 30, 2004 was the date for the 2nd Annual Shop Showdown. A relatively new contest in the east, the Showdown invites shops from around New England to send their best riders to battle it out on all sorts of elements in a jam style format. Prizes included a trip to Tahoe, lodging & lift tickets for the team for four days at Northstar and air travel via Southwest airlines, as well as, a killer trophy made by Matt Jagemann from Santa Cruz Snowboards for 1st place. Lift tickets, VIP pass, and lodging with members of the Oakley was 2nd place, and $200 in cash went to 3rd. Oakley also gave the top riders in each of the 4 sessions an Oakley backpack, with over $500 worth of prizes inside.
17 teams from around the Northeast assembled at Loon Mountain for the amateur contest, on a typical East Coast day! Theory, Eastern Boarder, Darkside, Ride 207, Fat Trax, and Lahoot’s just to name a few shops. After the morning thaw, the sun came out and the wind died just in time for a great BBQ at the Loon Mountain Park (LMP) Yurt. After lunch riders really turned it on for the last 2 sessions and fun was had by all!
The team from Eastern Boarder was unable to makeup any ground on last seasons stellar performance and failed to place this year. Jacque Beriau and John Strobel made a valiant effort with some stylish riding at the jumps and rails in the afternoon, but the end result was fourth.
Seth Learned and Chris Mitchell from No School Snowboard Shop in VT took 3rd place, mainly through their incredible pipe skills. You can sum it up in one word “Boosting”! The two Vermonters tried to claim the top spot, which had alluded them last season, but instead took home some cash!
Tyler Davis and Chaz Guldemond, last season’s Champs, for NuWave Sports in NH couldn’t repeat, but still walked a way with 2nd place. We’re sure that Matty Swanson and the Oakley Team will treat them well at the Open. Watch out for these guys they were throwing down all day and will surely come back next season with vengeance!
The top riders of the day were Austin Granger and Chris Grenier from Theory Snowboard Shop in MA. These guys were getting it done all day long, placing in all 4 sessions. The team was in full effect as they carried each other to the podium. At the end of the day a trip to Tahoe and the Showdown trophy went home with them to Mass for a year!
Much thanks go to Mark Wakeling from Oakley and Matt Jagemann from Santa Cruz, for the prizes, trophy, and spreading the word! Look for this event to go off again, next season at Loon!
