Boulder, Colo: — Inside Communications, Inc. announced that it has closed on its acquisition of Ski Racing magazine from Ski Racing International. The Vermont-based title will relocate to Boulder to be united with ICI’s market-leading cycling and triathlon titles VeloNews and Inside Triathlon.

Currently published in a newspaper format, Ski Racing will be re-launched at the start of the 2003 / 2004 ski season in August as a large-format glossy, saddle-stitched tabloid similar to VeloNews. All operations of the magazine, currently based in Waitsfield, Vermont, will re-locate to Boulder. Current Ski Racing publisher Gary Black will become a vice-chairman of Inside Communications and sit on ICI’s board of directors.

For Ski Racing the move back to Colorado is a return to its roots. Founded in 1968 in Denver by Bill Tanler, the title moved to Vermont in 1977. Ironically, its new sister title VeloNews was launched by publisher Barbara George in 1972 after she saw a copy of Ski Racing and thought the cycling world needed the same type of publication. VeloNews was also based in Vermont, and in 1988, the title was purchased by Inside Communications, relocated to Boulder and re-launched in a more magazine-like format. The title soon became the most successful cycling magazine.

“VeloNews delivers the high-end bike consumer where bike companies make their money. We plan to follow the same model for Ski Racing, in a market where some 10 percent of the industry’s customers supply 90 percent of its profits. Ski Racing owns the same high-end franchise as VeloNews, but until now has not aggressively marketed this advantage,” explained Felix Magowan, ICI’s president.

Added out-going publisher Gary Black, Jr., “Inside Communications was the logical buyer for Ski Racing. The sport is growing and the publication is poised to take advantage of ICI’s aggressiveness in the marketplace.”
