Well … in true Lake Tahoe form the weather was not so Spring like at the Heavenly Resort on March 25th for the 1st annual LumberJack LogJam, presented by SESSIONS. But, the weather did not keep many away, nor did it keep some of top amateur riders from throwing down on the course set up by the SouthShore Soldiers Troops and the Heavenly Park Crew.

The weekend started out with a swell spring day for practice and registration on Friday, and the registration was maxed out with 80 riders signed up by the afternoon. Even though this was an amateur event, there was a lot at stake with the winner getting an invite to SuperPark and a grip of other prizes! The course was designed to be fun and laidback, not super gnarly as we wanted everyone to just have fun and feel like they were just shredding with their homies. Heavenly did just that with the course, which consisted of a channel gap at the top with a long flat box in between, then into a nice medium sized park kicker, then you could choose between a 2 piece flat to down street rail or a up to flat box, which looked to be the most fun for the riders! After all those the course ended up with yet another tough choice between a straight street rail, a real log rail setup, or another log that had p-tex topping on it…after all it is the LogJam! After getting wicked on the wood, there was a dope wall ride that you could also air to from the side and slide the top. The wall ride is where we saw the Best Trick go down from Robert Dawson with a 270 across the top of the wallride, to 270 out. He ended up finishing the day in 3rd place.

The contest was run in a jam format, with the top 10 from each heat going to the finals. The judges, which consisted of SESSIONS Pro Brandon Bybee, and Tahoe ripper Jimi Tomer braved the soggy weather and had a tough time judging as so many people where throwing down and just having fun! As the day went on it seemed as though the young bucks where the ones to watch, as Zak Hale and Nick Poohachoff where slaying it all day. Nick ended up with the top score in the qualifiers, putting him on the top going into the finals. But, after the finals it was Zak who would end up with the win and a round trip ticket to anywhere in the US and the ticket to SuperPark! Not bad for a 13 year old, after riding solid all day and mixing it up on all the obstacles! It was pretty rad watching all the young bucks ride and see that they did not really care if they won or not, but rather just have some fun and maybe win some goodies!

Jimmy Halopoff on Zak Hale, “Overall, his consistency really validated the little man winning.

Joanna D. was the only female shredder to hang with the guys in the finals and she killed it. She was awarded the Paula Bunyon Award, ticket to ride, and an invite to the womens Superpark in Mammoth.

The LumberJack JogJam was started as an outlet for any sponsored amateurs to come out and ride and showcase their talent and style in a fun and mellow atmosphere. And come out they did…there were riders from all over the US and Canada, as well as some ladies that were holding it down with the boys. The contest was a huge success and look for more stops in the future!

“Sessions LogJam is a true grassroots event. It gives the younger riders their own event without being over shadowed by the big name pros. These kids are the future of our sports. Rob Jah.

A special thanks goes out to all the sponsors. Sessions, Heavenly Resort, Electric, SouthShore Soldiers, Snowboarder, Freeskier, SkullCandy, Gore-Tex and Hanes Beefy T.

See you next year!
