When their rep stepped out of the biz last spring after establishing a network of some of the best shops in Southern California, the Rome Snowboard Design Syndicate hung back during the summer months of 2002 and took its time talking with a bunch of different people to fill the slot.
A few weeks ago, Rome pulled the trigger and enlisted Rich Smith to rep the line and continue spreading the Syndicate’s disruptive influence in the hills and on the streets of Socal and Arizona. Like the rest of Rome’s rep crew, Rich is a rider-rep who is involved in the Syndicate and who cares about the direction snowboarding is heading in—not just some traveling salesman pimping random snowboard products on stores.
Rich comes to Rome with the combined experience of a daily riding habit and a bunch of years working with board shops to support their businesses. For an eight-year stretch in the 90s, Rich left his Encinitas home and lived the life of a 100-day-a-year rider at the base of Squaw Valley. During those years in Tahoe, he honed his skills with a tuning file in the backroom of a shop in Olympic Valley, and later learned the ropes as a tech rep for several snowboard brands.
A few years ago, the tech repping gig evolved to the point where Rich moved back to his home turf in Encinitas and started repping full time on his own in Southern California. He might miss those late season three-foot days at Squaw, but the surf is just down the road and the parks of Summit and Big Bear are always well groomed.
Recently, we emailed Rich and asked him all the critical questions of the day. Here’s his basic fact sheet:
