Rip Curl Europe has officially announced a partnership deal as a main sponsor for the ‘The Battle’ snowboard event in Sweden to be held in March 19-23 2003.
‘The Battle’ is an intercontinental team event that brings together the world’s most elite snowboarders in what is undoubtedly the most progressive snowpark ever made.
‘The Battle’ is one of the 8 events that compose the “Ticket To Ride” (TTR) competition circuit. Hailed a revolutionary break-through for professional snowboarding, the TTR tour has replaced the now defunct ISF circuit, and is controlled by a board of snowboarders including Jacob Söderqvist, Terje Haakonsen, and Reto Lamm. The TTR snowboarding tour is now the new standard for today’s competitive snowboarding, where creative, progressive riding is encouraged and rewarded.
“The Battle is an extra-ordinary event that is inspired by and created for the core athlete, this is very much in-line with the brand values of Rip Curl” explains Troy Ballard, Rip Curl International’s Mountain-wear Chairman.
Indeed, no less than 5 different regions of the world will be represented at ‘The Battle’ including Europe, Scandinavia, USA, Canada, and Australia/New Zealand/Japan.
The Scandinavians are the first to announce their team of riders, and it’s impressive to say the least. Lead by Ingemar Backman as team captain, the troop consists of Terje Haakonsen, Jussi Oksanen, Wille Yli-luoma and a fifth rider TBA. Michi Albin has just announced he is clear to be team captain for Europe, an Jacob will soon announce his local team. Updates to be found daily on the website. All of those will represent their region in a show-down that is sure to be snowboarding’s highlight of the year.
“We are very happy to start a collaboration with a company that understands what The Battle is really about: fun, friendship and progression. We are grateful to benefit from Rip Curl’s infrastructure and experience, and are looking forward to creating a long-lasting partnership” expressed an elated Marika Borg, Managing Director of ‘The Battle’.
Famous for its massive “mother of all gaps” jump that generated outstanding media coverage in 2001, The Battle site is nothing short of awe inspiring. And in 2003, it’s getting even more creative with never seen before cliff drops, kickers, hips, rails and other jibbing material.
Event organiser and pro rider Jacob Söderqvist will join the Rip Curl professional snowboarding team. Acclaimed within the snowboarding community as one of the most accomplished riders in Europe, Söderqvist’s long list of achievements include a finals birth at the Winter Olympics (Nagano) and Snowboard World Championships (Whistler).
“Jacob is a very talented rider and a credit to the sport” declares Andy Higgins, a Marketing Executive from Rip Curl Europe. “We are committed to the development of the event and snowboarding in general, and we see Jacob as a major asset to both. We welcome him to our team and look forward to a mutually beneficial relationship”.
The Battle is proudly presented by Corona Extra; supported by Rip Curl, and Arnette.
Associate sponsors include Onboard, Transition, Lunastorm.com, MTV, Braun, and Vertical Snowtoys.
