Mates in Alaska – A group of Kiwis travel to Alaska for some big mountain riding in the last frontier.
Haines, Alaska is known as one of the gateways to ride the best mountains in the world. Riders Jake Koia and Roland Morley-Brown, filmer Tim Pierce and Vaughan Brookfield, had never been to Alaska before until our visit in March, 2013 when Red Bull sent us on an experience of a life time.
The mountains are spectacular as they dwarf the small town of Haines. In mountains that big, steep, and deep, there is only so much that riders can do to manage avalanche risk. Beyond that, they’ve just got to back themselves that they will be able to react if something happens. With plenty of heli and on-mountain guiding time booked with Seaba Heli, Alaska provided us with some of the best days of riding in our lives. Everything was perfect; the weather, the snow, the crew, the vibe and the zones we went to.
The Alaskan peaks challenged Jake and Roland to the extent of their abilities.
This gallery is dedicated to our guide Aaron Karitis. Thanks for keeping us safe down some of the most remarkable lines of our lives. RIP.
