Tignes (France). The opening of the 2000/2001 Nokia Snowboard FIS World Cup was concluded with the Giant Slalom today. Italian riders Walter Feichter and Carmen Ranigler claimed the gold and both got their first-ever wins in an alpine Snowboard race under their belt.

The conditions were excellent for the first run, but then the clouds came in and caused bad visibility for the second run and ¿ fortunately right after the awards ceremony ¿ heavy snow fall started.

Italy’s Walter Feichter who has placed once with a second place in the Giant Slalom at Mont-Sainte-Anne (Canada) last season, made it to fourth place in the first run and looked as if he could not believe that the scoreboard identified him as the leader.

Feichter was overwhelmed: “I don’t know what to say ¿ this is probably the best day the Italian team has seen ever. Due to the bad visibility in the second run I really didn’t expect anything like that and still don’t know how I managed to do this. I made two mistakes so it’s unbelievable that I worked it out.”

Reigning GS World Cup champion Stefan Kaltschütz from Austria, who was ranked second after the first run, really wanted the win today but missed it by 39 hundreds of a second. “I’ve put in 100 percent but did make two little mistakes,” he said. “I was really going for a win and knew I was able to do it but it looks as if no one could stop Walter today, so second is fine for me, especially considering that it’s the first race of the season. I was training hard for the last three months and it paid off today.”

Daniel Biveson from Sweden finished third. “This was my best result ever apart from a second place in Snowboard Cross in 1997,” he said. “I have been riding pretty good in training but made a little mistake in the first run so I could only imagine to make it up to sixth or fifth place ¿ I never thought about the podium anymore so I’m really happy.”

The womens’ race was dominated by a Italian with Carmen Ranigler winning ahead of Marion Posch. Only Germany’s Heidi Renoth could prevent the Italians from claiming all three medals by finishing ahead of Italy’s Dagmar Mair unter der Eggen.

Ranigler stepped into the limelight last season with top results in Snowboard Cross, but never managed to win an alpine race before today. “Super, I just can’t believe it,” the 24 year old said. “The second run was extremely difficult due to the lack of visibility and I got to a point where I even expected to drop out but then I just forced myself to keep on ¿ I never expected to win! It’s great to start a season like this and I’m glad the World Cup is on again. We had so much bad luck with the weather during training over the past couple of weeks so I could not wait anymore to compete again.”

Ranigler’s teammate Marion Posch had to wait for a podium in GS for two years and was stoked. “I can’t even remember when I rode that good last time and I usually prefer the Slalom anyway but I’m really happy. The slope here was perfect but a lot riders had serious problems in the second run due to the weather.”

Heidi Renoth came in third and felt relieved: “Such a result is the most motivating thing for the season. I did not even think about it since I was only ranked 11th after the first run but I really pushed me however. When I made it to the podium in GS last time in Park City the season was almost over and I have been fighting all season for that. That’s the big difference ¿ it’s so much better this way with a top rank at the beginning of the season.”

Karine Ruby from France, who was leading after the first run, crashed in the lower section in the second run and finally finished 11th.

The next World Cup stage is scheduled for 01-03 December in Tandadalen, Sweden. Due to the current weather conditions in Scandinavia it is not confirmed yet if the World Cup will happen there as planned. A final decision will be taken on 24 November.
