MUNICH, Germany (December 3, 2003) – – New designs, new exhibitor communities, increased numbers of exhibitors and spectators, and considerable enthusiasm are lighting up Munich as the world’s foremost winter sports show, ispo, prepares for its 2004 running.
ispo_Winter ’04 takes place February 1 – 4 at the New Munich Trade Fair Center. More than 50,000 visitors from nearly 100 countries are expected to join over 1,500 exhibitors—including a growing contingent of U.S.- based manufacturers. The show covers nearly 1.5 million square feet, the largest sports trade exhibition in the world. ispo brings together the entire winter sports community, plus numerous year-round sports and sporting lifestyles. Exhibit communities include board_ispo for snowboarding, surfing and skateboarding; ski_ispo; outdoor_ispo; running_ispo; sportswear_ispo; textrends_ispo; teamsport_ispo; bike_ispo; racket_ispo; fitness_ispo and sourcing_ispo. In addition, ispo will debut a crossover hall for the ski and outdoor exhibitors, due to the increasing popularity of freestyle skiing.
ispo will debut its newest evolution in trade fair presentation, ispovision. A number of deeply-rooted sports-inspired fashion manufacturers, including American companies Converse and Stussy, will exhibit in an urban boutique “Style City” motif that includes uptown, downtown, Park Village and Bayside – each representing a different fashion trend.
Each of the halls features special programs and activities that accentuate trends in sports performance, lifestyle, fashion, and the growing crossover relationships between various sports. Some of the more prominent activities will include snow_summit and “Seed Bed” at the board_ispo hall; Runner’s World Action Point at running_ispo; outdoor_summit and ski_summit; and dynamic fashion shows in the outdoor, board and sportswear halls.
Snow_summit is one of the most anticipated events of ispo_Winter ’04. European and American retailers, distributors and manufacturers will gather to discuss media, video, snow parks, shop merchandising and marketing, and the findings of a recent European Youth Culture Study co-sponsored by ispo and Label Networks, a Los Angeles-based market research firm.
Evening activities include community nights for board_ispo, outdoor_ispo and ski_ispo, plus the ispo charity night that takes place January 31. There are also numerous side events sponsored by manufacturers.
Special contingents of touring snowboard and ski retailers from the United States will be among the visitors at ispo_Winter ’04.
ispo features four of the most forward-thinking special events in the sporting goods industry: the Volvo SportsDesign Forum, the ispo BrandNew Award, the ispo Wellness Congress and the ispo Sports Sponsoring Congress. The Volvo SportsDesign Forum will take place January 31 at International Congress Munchen (ICM), located in the same Messe Muenchen complex as ispo. Designers, visionaries and executives will join participants and media for presentations and workshops focusing on the core topic, “The Snow and Ice Challenge – Influence of Cold Elements as Well as Demands of Extreme Athletes.”
The ispo BrandNew Award is a seasonal competition to determine the best new sports products in the world. More than 125 entries from over 20 countries compete for awards in seven categories. Category winners receive marketing and promotional packages valued in excess of $100,000. The winners, and 32 finalists, exhibit in the BrandNew Pavilion at ispo. Typically, ispo BrandNew Award winners and finalists have deeply influenced product design in the industry for years following their debuts. Among the finalists at ispo_Summer ’03 was Surf Chick, a women’s sportswear company based in California.
The ispo Wellness Congress also takes place January 31 at the ICM. “Better Aging Through Sports and Fitness” is the theme, featuring athletic activities, healthy nutrition, mental training, psychological and medical aspects. Dr. Müller-Wohlfahrt, the team physician of the national German soccer team, will participate as a speaker.
On Monday and Tuesday, February 2-3, the 8th ispo Sports Sponsoring Congress is scheduled at the ICM. The event organizers, the European Sponsoring Exchange, ESB, are once again expecting more than 400 sponsors and sports and media decision-makers at their industry meeting for professional sports marketing.
