I’m experiencing, for the first time in my life, a real Monday through Friday job; therefore, I will not have the entire summer off to do whatever I please, as I usually do. This is a huge adjustment, as anyone can imagine having to go to work to write about snowboarding from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on a gorgeous, clear, sunny day when the rest of So Cal is beach-bound with their surfboards in hand. It’s going to be a challenge.

What is it about summer? It has always been my favorite season¿long days full of sunshine, hanging out at the beach and in the water, feeling tan and healthy, and barbecuing with friends and family. But most of all, it has always been vacation time. Time to explore, play, and relax¿time to get away. The best vacation I’ve ever been on was the summer of ’98 when I was in Costa Rica for a month, backpacking, camping, and surfing with my boyfriend. For this last issue of the SNOWboarding season, we asked where others have gone to escape from the daily grind. Have a great summer!¿Tara Miller

“My best vacation was last summer when I went on a boat trip down to Indonesia with seven friends. It was sort of a bachelor party because I was getting married five days after I returned home. We were on the boat for fourteen days, and all we did was surf perfect waves with no other people in sight. It was paradise. We had a cook on board who fixed us anything we wanted when we got out of the water, and we had DVD players and air conditioning in our cabins. By the fourth day we were so surfed out that we had to force ourselves into the water. Our arms were so tired, but the waves were perfect¿we had to stay out all day and surf. It was super warm, and we never had to wear anything except our surf trunks. I felt very far away from the mountains and snow. It was a feeling of bliss.”

“Last summer I spent six weeks surfing in Costa Rica with five non-snowboarding friends. We had a nice tour of the West Pacific Coast from north to south, looking for good waves the whole time. It was the best trip I’ve ever been on because we planned it ourselves and moved according to the swell.”

“The best vacation I’ve been on was this last summer when I went home to Toronto and hung out with my family and friends. I got a chance to see everyone and party with everyone, and I left feeling great.”

“My best vacation ever was when I went to Utah and stayed at Jeremy Jones’, J.P. Walker’s, Mikey LeBlanc’s, and Rebecca’s house. They are super fun to hang out with. We’d go skateboarding, listen to music, snowboard together, play C-low, write freestyle raps, and hang out with Nate Bozung, too. Much love and respect to all those people. Thanks for letting me stay at your house for the month.”
