Hurley International announced that the 10th annual H2O Winter Classic is set to take place February 8-10,2002, with a $15,000 prize purse. Hurley, along with DVS Shoe Company, willonce again present the annual surf/snowboard event, due to the overwhelmingsuccess of last year’s event. “We’re proud to be involved, once again, withthe H2O Winter Classic”, Says Paul Gomez, Head of Marketing for Hurley,”This is the only event that we feel captures the true meaning of the boardsports lifestyle.”
The 2002 H2O Winter Classic will kick off Friday, February 8th with aconcert, with details to follow as available. Performers from past yearsinclude Pennywise, Face to Face, Unwritten Law, Jimmy Eat World, KottonmouthKings, and Blink 182. The surf contest will take place February 9th at theHuntington Beach Pier in Huntington Beach, CA, and the snowboardingcompetition will take place February 10th at Mountain High Winter Resort inWrightwood, CA.
The H2O Winter Classic presents a unique opportunity for professionals,amateurs, and board sports industry leaders to compete in a weekend ofsurfing and snowboarding, each in their own divisions. Pro snowboarder,Dave Downing, states, “I like that everyone just hangs out and has fun. Ialso like that we get to surf and snowboard in the same weekend.” Pastcompetitors include Terje Haakonsen, Jamie Lynn, C.J. Hobgood, ShaneBeschen, and Keith Malloy.
“I started the H2O Winter Classic as a way to give back to the industry andthe sports I love,” says Vipe Desai, the event’s founder. “The fact thatthe event has received so much support from the athletes and industry isreally rewarding.” Desai began the event ten years ago when he owned theH2O Surf and Snowboard shop in Sunset Beach, CA. The contest has sincebecome a template for the proliferation of events that marry boards sportsand music in a festival-like atmosphere.
