The wind died down and the sun came out as the thermometer creeped up from this week’s sub zero temps. The women’s qualifiers were today’s main event in the prefect pipe at Copper, Colorado. There were 50 women competing in two seperate heats for the eight final spots. The competition was intense and there were some new faces pushing their way to the top—two new names in women’s pipe riding: Steamboat Spring’s Maddy Schaffrick and Spaniard Quera Castellet gave some seasoned riders a run for their money. Finals are on Saturday, and men’s pipe qualifiers are tomorrow. This afternoon’s pipe practice was a dizzying display of doubles—Danny Davis, Louie Vito, and Shaun White stood out, but anything can happen. Stay tuned for a more detailed breakdown tomorrow.
