Click here for a Quicktime video clip of Quarterpipe action.

The action started around 7 p.m. as riders began braving the thick fog as they hurled off the 20+ quarter pipe. Tom Gilles started things off early with massive airs to fakie, James Beach raised the amplitude bar throwing down solid michalchucks way above the height meters. The crowd was definetly behind dark horse Hayes Brothers’ rider Ted Raugh as he tried over and over for the double back flip pummeling himself into the lip.

On the women’s side of things, Hannah Teter boosted big smooth airs and stomped clean spins, slipping her into third place. Jaime MacLeod mixed it up all night with backside fives, airs to fakie, and big clean airs for a second place finish. Olympic gold medalist and Vermont’s own Kelly Clark Mctwisted her way into the top spot and $10,000.

The men’s field was as thick as the fog with riders like Bryan Iguchi, Abe Teter, and Romain De Marchi dropping the hammer all night long. Dylan Butt flew in from New Zealand and walked away with third. Keir Dillon launched giant McTwists all night long raising the amplitude bar with every hit and grabbing second place. Travis Rice took his traveling circus show to the Open and has been turning heads all week with tremendous speed and cat like landings. The quarterpipe fell victim to Rice’s path of destruction as he powered his way into first place and $10,000 with giant Michalchuks and huge airs

After an imprumto doubles exhibition from Romain Demarchi and Anne Molin Kongsgaard. Sobe awarded an additional 2,500 to the best trick for both men and women. Hannah Teter scooped up the loot with a frontside seven and Romain De Marchi took top honors with a gigantic Haakon 9. After a brief, security-infested award ceremony it was time for the crowd to slink back into the village and await the next days pipe finals. Giacamo Kratter summed the night up best when he said “Tomorrow we ride the pipe–Tonight we party!” Big thanks to Chris Copely for announcing the event and Sobe Beverages and Burton Snowboards for putting on the event.
