Sharing the spirit of events like the Baker Banked Slalom and The Rat Race, the Dirksen Derby is one of the most laid back, fun contests out there. The sixth annual Dirksen Derby goes down this weekend, December 14–16 at Mt. Bachelor and if you’re planning on riding in it a few things have changed since last year. Here’s what you need to know.
Registration has moved to the Sunrise Lodge. Check the Mt. Bachelor trail map for location. Over 250 people have signed up so far and online registration is closed. You can still register the day of the event at the Sunrise Lodge.
The course location has changed, as it does every year. The new course will run alongside the Carrousel Chair. Each berm in the 14-berm course has been hand dug by Dirksen and a crew of volunteers. Similar to last year, the Red course is more aggressive while the Green course is mellower.
Bring a short board, Dirksen recommends. It makes it way easier to get through the tight berms. He’s been running the course on a 151.
Racing and Party Schedule
Friday will be a practice day on the Derby courses followed by the all-ages Dirksen Derby Kick-Off Party and Broken Board Art Auction on Friday evening at 6 p.m. at the Century Center in Bend. Racing will be held on Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Racing schedule is subject to change based on weather and snow conditions. Everyone should be available to race on Saturday and/or Sunday.

Money raised from the event goes to support Tyler Eklund who was paralyzed in a crash at the USASA Nationals in 2007.
