Premier Sporting Goods Retailer Debuts Unique ‘7 Performance Shops in One’
Concept at New Clackamas Town Center Store
PORTLAND, Ore., Sept. 12 /PRNewswire/ — A climbing wall and golf simulator are perhaps the most striking aspects of the new Copeland Sports store in the Clackamas Town Center, but what truly sets the store apart from other sporting goods stores is the entire presentation.
The concept for the store is built around the theme of “7 Performance Shops in One,” an exciting approach that’s unique to the sporting goods category. The 36,000 square foot layout takes top brand name equipment, accessories, footwear, and apparel and features them in seven distinct “performance shops”: athletics, fitness, outdoor, golf, cycling, women’s, and skateboard/snowboard.
“Copeland Sports has long been recognized as the place to go for top-quality sporting goods and highly-trained staff,” said Joe Fernandez, President of Copeland Sports. “With the ‘Seven Performance Shops in One’ concept, customers have the opportunity to experience the knowledge, selection, and attitude of a specialty shop with the value and convenience of a superstore.”
And, by also offering value-added services and programs such as bike repair, professional golf instruction, home delivery, team discounts, and home gym design and layout advice, Copeland Sports has further distinguished itself from the typical big-box approach to sporting goods retail.
“The combination of product selection, additional services, and space makes Copeland Sports a one-stop-shop for customers. But, with the Performance Shop concept, it’s not overwhelming,” said Mr. Fernandez. “Customers can immediately recognize the area that appeals to them and get the expert assistance they need to ensure they’re getting the product that matches their requirements. In every shop, we’ve built value into the merchandise through staff education and extra services that help make the shopping experience more complete and fulfilling.”
To help introduce the new store, Copeland Sports has created all new store signage and is running a series of four television commercials on cable in the market, plus an aggressive newspaper insert program. The television campaign features runners waiting for the starting gun with each spot building momentum up to and through the store’s grand opening. The newspaper advertisements focus on exclusive grand opening specials, celebrity appearances, and contests.
“While we already have a strong presence in the Portland area, we wanted to do something that would not only get the word out about the new store, but differentiate Copeland Sports from other retailers,” said Mr. Fernandez. “Through our extensive experience with our other Oregon locations, we’ve outfitted the store with the products the customers are seeking and designed a layout that allows the customer to find what they want quickly and easily. Everything we’ve done reinforces the fact that Copeland Sports is the choice for individuals who are not just passionate about sports, but border on obsessive about their gear.”
Copeland Sports has five stores in the Portland area, with the new store replacing a smaller store in the Clackamas Town Center that offered only Skateboard/Snowboard and Athletics with related footwear and apparel. Three additional locations: downtown Portland, Jantzen Beach, and Beaverton feature all seven shops. The Lloyd Center store carries merchandise similar to the small store replaced in Clackamas.
With stores in Eugene and Medford also, Copeland Sports has a total of seven locations in Oregon.
“Oregon, and especially the Portland area, is very important strategically for us,” said Mr. Fernandez. “The sporting goods consumers in the area are the perfect match for Copeland Sports — they’re very knowledgeable about the activities they participate in and they expect the same from the place where they buy their gear. Our employees don’t just sell sporting goods, they uuse them.”
The Copeland Sports Clackamas Grand Opening runs through October 5th and features a number of high-profile celebrity appearances and special events.
Copeland Sports, headquartered in San Luis Obispo, CA, has 37 stores in Oregon, California, Utah, and Nevada.
