LAGUNA BEACH, CALIF. (March 8, 2000) — Where’s the capitol of the $5billion outdoor industry? Which city is fueling innovation for outdoorexplorers? Which state is home to the most outdoor industry companies?

Based on exhibitor statistics from the 2000 Outdoor Retailer Winter Marketshow, the state of California and the city of Seattle, Wash., are leadingthe pack in providing apparel and equipment for outdoor enthusiasts.

While the West dominated both the city and state rankings, New England madea strong showing with four states in the top ten.

In total, companies from 42 states and 396 cities displayed their wares atthe 2000 Outdoor Retailer Winter Market show. The international market wasalso well represented, with 60 cities and nine foreign countries sendingexhibitors to the show.

“The geographic base of the outdoor industry is remarkably diverse, due tothe fact that the boom in outdoor sports is something that’s happeningacross the country and around the world,” said Dieter Tremp, OutdoorRetailer Show Director. “But these companies do have something in common –they’re all striving to create products that enhance the outdoor experience,whether you’re crossing the Arctic Circle or car camping in Yellowstone.”

The top 10 states by number of companies attending the Winter Market showwere California (116), Colorado (77), New York (50), Washington (49), Utah(43), Oregon (24), Vermont (24), Massachusetts (23), Minnesota (21), andNew Hampshire (21).

The top 10 cities represented at the show were Seattle, Wash. (29); New YorkCity, N.Y. (26); Salt Lake City, Utah (24); Boulder, Colo. (18); Jackson,Wyo. (9); Berkeley, Calif. (7); Denver, Colo. (7); Minneapolis, Minn. (7);Portland, Ore. (7); and San Francisco, Calif. (7).

Based on per capita population figures, the leading states are Vermont,Wyoming and Utah, while the leading cities are Williston, Vt.; Jackson,Wyo.; and Steamboat Springs, Colo.

Held last month in Salt Lake City, Utah, the 2000 Outdoor Retailer WinterMarket show attracted more than 15,000 people, including nearly 6,000buyers.

The Outdoor Retailer Winter and Summer Market shows are the world’s largestoutdoor industry trade shows. Outdoor Retailer Magazine, published since1980, is the leading publication for the outdoor marketplace. The nextOutdoor Retailer show on the calendar is the 2000 Summer Market, scheduledfor Aug. 11-14 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
