Foundation Targets Organizations Where Donations Can Make a Noticeable Difference While Continuing Successful Educational Outreach Programs-

Boarding For Breast Cancer Foundation (B4BC), a non-profit, youth-focused organization devoted to education, awareness and fundraising for breast cancer has announced its 2002 beneficiaries. B4BC will donate funds raised at this year?s annual Snowboard + Music Festival and Board-A-Thon programs to the Barton Memorial Hospital, Munson Health Care Organization?s Women?s Cancer Fund, The Sarah Fischer Breast Health Project and the Uniquely You Boutique and Salon in the Glens Falls Hospital Cancer Center. B4BC will also allocate monies to support an educational outreach program developed by the foundation itself.

The Barton Memorial Hospital, based in South Lake Tahoe, Calif. has been a beneficiary for B4BC for three years. Funds donated from the 2001 Snowboard + Music Festival were used for the construction and completion of the Barton Memorial Hospital Breast Cancer Research Library. Located in the Barton Health Resource Center, the library offers patients the tools to make informed decisions about their health. The Barton Memorial Hospital takes an active role in educating attendees of the B4BC event each year by hosting an informative, on-site self-exam clinic with hospital nurses, volunteers and breast cancer survivors.

Munson Health Care is an organized system of health care providers based in Michigan. As a regional, non-profit system, it offers a continuum of health care services for communities throughout 24 counties. Proceeds from the 2002 Board-A-Thon at Crystal Mountain in Michigan have already contributed to the organization?s Women?s Breast Cancer Fund.

The Sarah Fischer Breast Health Project is a unique, comprehensive, cooperative county-wide health education effort led by St. Charles Medical Center, the Central Oregon Community College and physicians from Bend and Redmond, Ore. Sarah?s project seeks to improve women?s health through an aggressive program of prevention, research and education with an emphasis on early detection of breast cancer. The Mt. Bachelor Board-A-Thon in Bend, Ore. benefited this organization.

Located in the Glen Falls Hospital Cancer Center in Glen Falls, New York, the Uniquely You Boutique and Salon is dedicated to the special needs that patients may have as a result of cancer treatment. A staff beautician provides assistance in selection, styling, and care of wigs as well as the wear of turbans, hats, and scarves. Other services provided include post-mastectomy fittings, skin care, including facials, and nail care. These services are provided free of charge to any cancer patient, regardless of their treatment facility or physician. Proceeds from the 2002 Board-A-Thon at Gore Mountain will be distributed to the Uniquely You Boutique and Salon.

Differentiating itself from other youth-focused fundraising vehicles, B4BC has supported a strong educational platform since its inception. As a way to reach the youth directly on its own, B4BC also allocates a portion of funds raised to its own educational initiatives, called the outreach programs. At the inaugural Snowboard + Music Festival, B4BC organized a tented educational area to house various breast cancer organization booths, art exhibits and interactive awareness campaigns. Today, this remains a thriving part of the Snowboard + Music Festival. To be considered, an organization must present a unique, educational campaign targeted at the youth market.

B4BC has also developed a unique program to encourage festival attendees to visit the educational area. Called the Passport Program, it requires attendees to get three stamps on the back of their event program in exchange for a free raffle ticket. Stamps are given out at each booth once the attendee has completed the interactive educational program offered. Sponsor-donated prizes are raffled at the completion of the event. Required areass to visit for passport stamps are the Barton Memorial Hospital Self-Breast Exam Clinic, the Breast Cancer Action Group and the W.i.g. booth (an online magazine devoted to women?s issues) for a history lesson about the Boarding For Breast Cancer Foundation and ways they can get involved with the cause.

To compliment the Snowboard + Music Festival?s educational component, B4BC created a traveling educational booth that made its debut on the Warped Tour in 1999. The booth is complete with a jelly breast mold filled with fibrous tumors, giving young men and women hands on experience in detecting real life suspect breast lumps. In its first year, B4BC taught more than 20,000 young people to do self-breast exams. The traveling education booth has become a powerful tool for B4BC to disseminate their message as well as teach young men and women to be in charge of their own health.

The B4BC educational outreach now includes breast mold art displays and exhibitions, distribution of tens of thousands of educational shower cards at events nationwide, self-breast exam clinics, stickers, pins, breast mold painting, auctions and raffles. The foundation has been asked to participate in several action sports and music tours including the Roxy Art Exhibition this summer, the Vans Warped tour 2002, the summer and winter X-Games and possibly the Vans Triple Crown events. B4BC will continue to use 80% of money raised for breast cancer awareness and education programs.

Since its inception in 1994, B4BC has raised over $1 million for the breast cancer cause. B4BC shifted its fundraising efforts to focus on smaller organizations several years ago when it found that donations to larger organizations were not having the tangible impact that the foundation was seeking to achieve. B4BC made a conscious choice to earmark grants for charities where their efforts will make a noticeable difference requiring these charities to be accountable for funds donated. Now the foundation chooses beneficiaries that closely align with its mission to raise public awareness, particularly among young people, concerning breast cancer issues including early detection and good health practices.
